I'm not sure why a 16-year old should get a rear-wheel drive car, although as a former 16-year old, I wanted one too. Much more fun to "burn rubber". There are few reliable, inexpensive, non-performance (and thus relatively safe) rear-wheel drive cars these days. For a used car, the best bet is a early to mid-90's Nissan 240sx. For something more recent, how about an all-wheel drive instead, like a Suburus Impreza? Note: if the driver lives where it gets icy/snowy in winter, then you might as well give him a motorcycle. . .

I am 21 years old, and from personal experience, I would suggest that you not get a sports car for your first car. Most people just aren't ready for all that power when they 1st get their license. Also, insurance would be extremely high. And another thing to consider is, if you get a slower car 1st and hone your driving skills, save money, and then later purchase a sports car, you will appreciate the added power even more.
But if you really really need that power right off, try something with AWD. Like the Subaru WRX, Mitsubishi Evo, Mazda Speed6, Volvo S60 R, Volkswagen R32, etc. But more than likely these will be out of your price range, so the only ones i can think of that have AWD, decent power, and fairly inexpensive are: older Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX/ Eagle Talon TSi/ Plymouth Laser, or a Mitsubishi 3000GT/ Dodge Stealth RS.
I would still recommend getting a car that is FWD or AWD that is not neccessarily a sports car, for all the reasons stated above. If you just want the sporty look check out Honda Civic Si, Honda CRX, Honda Accord coupe, Acura Integra, Scion TC, Toyota Celica, VW GTI, Ford Focus SVT, Dodge Avenger. Most of these look pretty sporty, and still have decent power.
If you need RWD, try the Mazda Miata, BMW M3, Nissan 240SX...
Hope this helps.

Almost all sports cars are rear wheel drive, many sporty cars are FWD. And NO 16 year old needs a sports car, wait until you have driven for 2-3 years.

it actually relies upon on how lots you're prepared to pay to insure it?? the main suitable promoting and in all risk maximum solid 2 seater interior the international is the Mazda MX5, no longer THAT rapid regardless of the shown fact that. Honda S2000 is fairly close in the back of and is lots swifter and greater exciting with an fairly severe reving engine. OR in case you like something you will get your friends in attempt a VW golfing GTI, Seat Leon cupra, Honda Civic kind R, Ford concentration ST170, in the experience that your speaking all out no problem getting or procuring coverage then decide for a Subaru impreza or a Mitsubishi Evo, they'll blow maximum autos which comprise porsches off the line! yet they are VERY VERY high priced to run! With 12K to spend you have a great determination of autos basically confirm youchronic some in the previous you're making your techniques up! you need to basically get a typical automobile and adjust it? get it chipped and Engine remapped, then kind suspension and brakes out plus then it is cosmetics? fee you extra money than it is nicely worth regardless of the shown fact that!

For a 16 year old "fwd" and "sport car" are very bad words
for your insurance company, until you reach the age of 25.
You can get insurance, but you'll pay the "maximum premium"
so avoid the "cop chasers."
But with the American economy the way it is. Please buy
"American, and keep America growing. Thank You. <}:-})

Used 1996 Chevy Camaro with the V-6.
I own one and love it.
Dependable, rear wheel drive, sharp American styling, corners great, and gets 22 MPG.
Just my opinion
