Some say that the Serpent was Satan.

The Fall of Man
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"
2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' "

4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

Read how Satan acts in Job. It is very much like how the serpent acted with EVE.

1 On another day the angels [a] came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them to present himself before him. 2 And the LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?"
Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it."
3 Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason."

4 "Skin for skin!" Satan replied. "A man will give all he has for his own life. 5 But stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face."

6 The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life."

7 So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. 8 Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.

9 His wife said to him, "Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!"

10 He replied, "You are talking like a foolish [b] woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?"
In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.

In many parts of the bible Satan works for and with God.

He questioned her to create doubt in her mind, this would make it easier to deceive her. The motive, well, if you decide the snake is Satan in disguise or an entity sent by Satan then the motives would center upon jealousy and maliciousness.

*somethingtrinity brings up a good point. The serpent was aware of Eve's vulnerability and Adam's partiality toward her. If Adam had been a stronger minded man, there is a good chance we could have avoided all of this. There are some who believe that Adam and Eve were aware of the conflict going on between Satan and his followers and God and His followers. If that were true, then Eve may have been wondering what was so irresistable about the knowledge of evil. This certainly led to an opening for her to be deceived.

*If it was easier to deceive Eve because she was the 'weaker flesh', then why didn't Adam speak up and warn her against it. The Scripture indicates that Adam was present but remained silent. He followed her lead and thus when he was punished, part of it was a lesson in how he should actually behave when made responsible for someone.

Why can't you spell the word THE? That's really weird how you did that each time.

If you read up on the mythology of the Hebrews you will understand that the figure of the Adversary is one who tests the servants of Yahweh to see if they'll stay in line. In the Garden of Eden fable though, the serpent is not called the devil, Satan or the Adversary, but he's performing the traditional role.
It wasn't until much later that the Hebrew priests changed the character into the Prince of All Evil.

.Satan had rebelled against G-D Isaiah:14:12-14.Actually,read the whole chapter. He was thoroughly upset with G-D and waited mess up the good works of Creation and take over. The only way to do that, was to have Adam and Eve to give the earth back to him, Satan. Eve,he figured, would be an easier target. So he changed Himself into a serpent and Planted doubt in Eve's mind he is still doing today. Lust of the eyes, Lust of the flesh,Pride of life. -And G-D pronounced judgment over him and prophesied the coming of the Messiah. A good web site is "Three kinds of temptation" and look for crossroads. In yahoo its the top one. The link does not work here.

You don't still believe in magic snakes, do you sonny?

Reminds me of Bill Hicks' ...
I’ve just figured out women. How the fall of man occurred in The Garden of Eden.

Adam & Eve are in the Garden of Eden & Adam says: Wow. Look at this Eve. Here we are at one with nature and at one with god, we’ll never age, we’ll never die, and our dreams are realised the instant we think of them.

And Eve says: Yeah … it’s just not enough is it?

We are told that Satan took on the form of a snake in order to accomplish his goal. Eve was told by God "the day you eat of this fruit you shall surely die". Satan told Eve " you won't surely die", Eve fell for the deceit of Satan, thus sin and death entered the world.

Satan had just been kicked out of heaven for his pride and vanity. He disguised himself as a snake and deceived Eve so that she would be disobedient to God. Satan wanted to pull Adam and Eve down with him into hell.

Basically satan planted a seed of pride and vanity inside Eve. Same sin as his.

I think the snake knew that Adam was not taking care of Eve the way God had asked him to. Adam was responsible to teach her, especially about the snake. satan knew she was vulnerable and tempted her first. he knew that Adam would not fall for him, but for some reason, Adam listened to Eve.
