i read (in 'the rules' i think) that you should let them pay, as it makes them feel more manly or something. I'm quite happy to let him pay, but i don't want him to think i'm tight with money or rude if I don't offer to! this is really awkward, how do i gauge if i'm supposed to offer to get the next round?

maybe i didn't explain very well, it's not that I object to paying, or think that he should automatically pay beuase he's a man, it's more a case of, will it make him feel insulted, or 'value' me less if I offer to? that last bit is in reference to the stuff i read

Yes. As a rule of thumb, the person who invites should pay the bill. But it's always an option, to split the bill.

You should be prepared to chip in at least. Didn't women burn their bras and fight for equality and fairness all those years ago? Well now's the time to make use of it!

No doubt a man will offer / just pay for the drinks / meal (I often do, but not because I feel I SHOULD), but don't by any means expect that he should pay just because he's a man. There's entirely no reason why he should.

If he is old fassioned he will pay for the drinks, the meal and everything but will expect a night of pleasure in return (at least that is the unwritten rule of that generation). These days dates can be casual as, but be aware of tight guys.

Offering to get the next round is reasonable. He should not object to that, and should be appreciative.

Ask. Say something like my round or same again? If he says yes then buy him the drink, if he say says no then don't. I wouldn't worry to much about rules because every ones different. He likes you for you not for some book.

Offer to pay, if he says no, no I'll get it, don't insult him...let him pay so he feels good about it. But if he makes you pay all night, get rid of him.

My advice: Pay for everything, and demand that he has sex with you before leaving.

Obviously he'll be reluctant, but will feel obliged to stay till the end.

how would you feel if i asked you out to a themepark and expected you to pay for the tickets? if a guy asks you out on a date and you say yes, i think he would be seriously missing something if he expected you to pay for any service he intended to take you to, such as drinks in a restaurant for example, on the date.

furthermore, it's hard to pay for the drinks if you've been invited to his humble abode.
