I served in the army for about 6 years i went to iraq and was discharged after a bomb exploded which placed a lot of shrapnel into my body causing me to have trouble with my legs not always working properly. I wanted to go back to school get a GED (im a drop out) but the government said they won't pay cause im a dropout and cause my discharge wasn't honorable. Neither have they paid for the medical bills so I am slowly having to pay them through doing side jobs.

Is this right what the government says? What options do i have?

The government stated they won't pay medical bills cause it wasn't a honorable discharge.

I did not have an education higher than 9th grade (thats when I dropped out)

They didn't state exactly what they discharged me for, but probably because I can no longer travel on my feet for very long distances and no longer can run

First off, you need to fill in the rest of the story. You are leaving out huge details as to why you were discharged. A medical discharge due to the details you have provided means you should be getting disability from the Army. The VA should be providing benfefits as well. Contact the VFW or any other veterans organization and they will help you if you got screwed over. As far as the GED part, you can get into the military without a GED, but they would have provided the opportunity to get your GED and probably would have made you get it at some point within their specifiic regulations. This all sounds like you are full of something about the discharge. If you are being honest, and you got screwed over, start contacting your congressmen if you have talked with the VA office in your state and all other options have been exhausted. Take it to the press if that doesn't work and you have no other choices. If you got hurt in the military and got a discharge because of those injuries, they have to help you and you need to pursue all options to get help. If you got discharged for other reasons and are not hurt, shame on you. I'm might be wrong, but I'm throwing the BS flag on this one. Also, to the user that posted the comment about GI Bill benefits, you are wrong ... the program is called Vocational Rehabilitation and they are required to help you get retrained into a new job ... even if you denied the GI Bill ... read the fine print.

Well my fellow veteran I hate to tell u this but they have u over a barrel since ur discharge was not honorable they got u there,if it was a general or a medical they have to pay it and since u were hurt in combat I do not understand there explanation.
Have u contacted any of the organizations that help us veterans like the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion,The Veterans Of foreign War,I mean u even fall under the Vocational Rehabilitation Services, through the veterans affairs something is not right there but it all comes down to what type of discharge u got but still contact one of these organizations OK, something has to be able to be done to help u being a dropout does not make sense to me I was a dropout when I entered the military and got my GED,while I served in the Navy, and went to other schools while in the military so something is wrong u need to get help and support to find out if this is so so contact one of those organizations that is what they are there for I mean u-r- a disabled veteran as I am do not give up so easily start fighting back for what u feel u deserve especially since u were hurt in combat OK!

this story is so untrue on so many levels i dont even know where to start. ok first of all how did you enlist without at least a GED? did you lie to get in and show false documentation?........as for the discharge if you were truely discharged due to a service related injury it would be a medical discharge which is honorable. also once you are OUT of the military they dont pay for any education unless you elected the GI bill option. if you truly have a service related injury you should go to the VA for treatment although obviously thats not possible for you since you got something other than an honorable discharge from an army you were either never in or enlisted in fraudulently. sorry cant give you any ideas since your trolling, but thanks for the points and the entertaining story.

btw to settle the argument:
The basic qualifications for enlistment in the U.S. Army include:

• being from 17 to 34 years old
• be a U.S. citizen or resident alien, (must have the I-551)
• have a high school diploma or equivalent (such as a GED)
• be single with no children or married with 2 or less children
• pass the ASVAB test and
• pass the physical

these come from this page. http://www.army.com/enlist/active-duty-requirements.html

You would not have a less than honorable discharge just because of your feet and not being able to travel. You'd have a medical discharge under honorable conditions if you were a good girl. You don't get less than honorable unless you've done something wrong. You would know what you did wrong.

It is also stated on your dd214 under which conditions you got out.

I been in the army for about 20 years now and I heard cases like this. I suggest you speak with a lawyer or a public one if you cannot afford one.

As towards others posting that the army will not accept those who don't have a GED isn't accurate. The army would accept an individual with a GED provided that either they cant pay for education or they simply have a learning disability that prevents them from getting one.

Being discharged from the army is possible during active duty. Honorable or not. A discharge means that you are not fit for duty. Honorable means that you have integrity left with the army.

You have got to be retarded to beleave that story. This guy is leaving a major portion of this out. Theres no way you could be discharged from the army for a injury while serving on active duty, and it not be honorable.

The Army doesn't pay for college for spouses. Your husband can give you part of his GI Bill as a reenlistment option. You will have to fill out a FAFSA to apply for federal aid and pell grants.

So what exactly did they put you out for? Sounds like something fishy. Did you have college credit hours before you joined? If you had at least 15 ch before you joined, you was considered a graduate. If you was injured because of duty in Iraq, I would not understand why the DA does not pay for your medical bills.

Your post stinks to high heaven.
You have to at least have a GED to join the military...any branch.
The war in Iraq has strained America's military to the point where qualified new recruits are getting harder to come by. A high school diploma is a requirement in all branches of the military, but now the military is aiming to bring high-school dropouts into the fold.
