It is a 10 x 10 grid spreadsheet for a football pool. the squares have names in them, but wanted to number them in top left-hand or right-hand corner

i would like to have each of the 100 hundred cells numbered. The are to be smaller, similar to a trademark, than the text and located in top left or right corner of each cell

To raise number to upper left hand corner:
Select Cell..
Key F2 to edit.
Enter Number before Name.
Select Number and format as a SuperScript.
---
To raise number to upper right hand corner.
Follow same instructions, but Enter number after 'Name'

Alternate Methods:

Enter Number and use Ctrl-Enter to insert Carriage Return and move name down a line.

or

Go the End of the Name
Use Ctrl-Enter to insert Carrage Return
and Type in Number on this second line.

A super or sub script formatting of a portion of the text might work. What I would do is create the grid with 4 cells each. I would merge the top upper cells and place the name here. In the lower right or left corner I would put a value for the winner of that cell. I would designate a cell/cells that will contain the winning value. In the remainder of the empty cells I would paste the formula.

=if($a$1=b1,"Winner","")

Where $a$1 is the designated winning value and b1 changes to each blank cell that you have. Don't remove the $ signs.

To designate a cell as text in Excel, put a single quote before the text. For example, '1. team x would come out as 1. team x. Excel will get rid of the single quote. Hope this helps...

Click in the cells and add the numbers that you want.

You can right click the row or column and choose insert - that will add an additional row or column where you can put the outside numbers.

You should be able to put numbers in but of course they will still be 'text' not actual numbers.
