I use my car horn when I see somebody about to do something really dumb, such as pull out in front of me, sideswipe me, etc, and I want to call attention to it. Today, somebody tried to pull out in front of me while I was going 30 mph (the speed limit), and of course I screeched tbe horn as an alert. My boyfriend, who was riding with me, yelled at me for using the horn, calling it "uncivilized", saying I would get just as much of an effect if I were to stop, and stare the offending driver down. Let's solve this debate, yahoo answerers.... what are your opinions on this matter?

And yes, I do only use my horn sparingly, when I see a potential accident in the works.

blowing your horn is just like when you use your mouth and scream when there's something dangerous is about to happen, and hence warn the other about it. Believe me screeching your horn is a natural reaction and ask your boyfriend if you had stopped and something wrong happened to one of you, would it be civilized then.

Very seldom have I ever heard a horn used for this is meant purpose. even whilst a motive force is approximately to do something stupid i don't use my horn, because of the fact regularly then not they're going to end interior the worst available place. around right here we've one lane tunnels and the common prepare is to coach on your head lighting fixtures fixtures so different drivers will see you. i become taught to apply the horn whilst rounding a bend on a slender highway or close to the precise of a grade the place an on coming motive force ought to not comprehend you're there. the only ones i comprehend of that sound a horn in tunnels are people who in basic terms prefer to hearken to how loud they are able to blow. the significant's to me they seem to be a ineffective and if it become criminal i could take mine out of the motor vehicle.

horns have many uses, the ones you describe are some. it is good practise to blow your horn when backing out of a parking space or a garage to let anyone around you that there is movement also I have seen people do it but I don't know if it works is blow their horn at animals that are on the road so that they move and not get run over. I guess basically it is to get someones attention.

I don't think that I have used the horn on my car more than a couple of times in the last 20 years. Honking usually just makes the other driver mad without doing any good.

I do the same thing. If someone is about to cut me off/hit me...etc, I'll use my horn to get their attention. No problem with that. However, bad drivers are the thing that pisses me off the most in the world so I get angry pretty easily on the road. So sometimes people will get the horn and the angry staredown from me, haha.

I'm on your side. I would have done the same thing-except I would have screeched the horn for like 5-10 seconds. It makes my day.

The horn is a mandatory safety device for that reason. Be careful of road rage but is is required by law. If you remember the old safety sticker programs for cars you would recall that.

its a "signal horn" therefore can be used to alert other vehicles for whatever purpose, really even just to let another driver know that they pissed you off. (i use it for that sometimes and if that makes me uncivilised then so be it haha) depending on the actual situation you may or may not have been acting uncivilised but regardless of necessity it is technically "proper" to use your horn as a signal for any reason.
i have to add though....quit arguing with your boyfriend about dumb crap! who cares really, maybe you have different opinions on horn usage big deal, it irritates me when my girlfriend waits till the last second to stop and i always let her know, even though it is not necessarily "wrong" to wait till your ten feet from someone to stop it makes me uncomfortable, just don't honk when hes in the car and you wont have to sit through a lecture about how uncivilised you are (-:

I know for a fact there are people who drive with their thumb on the horn and blowing it at everything they perceive as a potential accident. such people are more of a hazard then the others they see as wrong

You are 100% correct. In fact the first horns were used to warn horses that an auto was coming from its blind spot (around corners, bridges, and hills) so they didn't freak out.
