I don't like being rude but they just keep following me around bugging me when I go into a furniture store. "I'm just browsing, thanks. I'll ask you if I have any questions," doesn't seem to do it. Know the magic thing to say? I have a lot of shopping to do and if I have to do it all with somebody hovering a few feet away trying to be helpful every 90 seconds, I am going to ...um... want to drink more beer than is entirely healthy or something.

When they introduce themselves, be cordial. Tell them you are just looking at the styles and ask for their card and what day they are off. Perhaps they won't be so pushy- they are just trying to make their living. It's a cut throat business between salespeople and they are just protecting their paycheck.

It depends on the store you are shopping in. If you are in a quality store no one follows you around. They respect your space.I have worked in quality stores. I asked the right questions and then let people flow through the store. When they are ready, if they are ready, we work together. The cheap stores follow you everywhere trying to make any sale possible. I worked in stores that were design oriented. Pick your store and make it work for you. But if you are going the cheap route, people will dog you. They have a different sales attitude. Regardless of where you shop your body language will determine how the sales person will handle you. If you exude class and you are in a classy shop the presentation will be entirely different. Shop in the right places.

Usually, what you said should be enough for them to get a hint. Those would be the things I'd say in that situation. If they're still on you like a fly on shi*, I'd probably just leave. A good salesperson would be sensitive to the fact that you don't want he or she hoovering over you, and that it would be better to back off.

"I'm just looking, thank you: if I see something I like, I'll be sure to ask you about
it".
I think they follow you around because they make commissions. If you walk up to another salesperson instead of that one that approached you, then that one gets the commission and the first guy is out the money.
What would make sense is to just pay the damn people a decent salary and not have all that competition going on in the store.

"I'll make you a deal. You leave me alone and let me look by myself and I won't walk out the door and head over to your competitor. Right now you're in my space and I find it a little rude and unprofessional. This is your last chance to back off. I will get you when I am ready. Thank you for offering to help."

I know what you mean, bugs me too......but there are some stores that sell furniture, that do just pay salary, and not commission.......maybe you should seek them out.....otherwise, what you are doing, is correct, maybe you need to repeat it once or twice......or reassure them that you will call them and not someone else if you require assistance.

i once had a part time sales job. the boss wanted me to follow every customer and sort of like "bug" them. if i wasnt right behind them, she'd accused me of not doing my job.
so i had to annoyed the customer. :( thank god, im doing nursing now.

i guess u could tell them u need to visualize ur planning and u dont see them in it.

or u could hide somewhere where they cannot find u

Tell them you just stop in the store to kill some time.

Or tell them you aren't buying anything today, so there's no need for assistance. However I'll take your card for the next time I visit the store.

I find dressing down works, like just a t-shirt jeans and sneekers....put my hair back in a ponytail. If I look like I don't have money to spend, I find they don't bother me as much. :-)

Turn to them and ask, "Can I help YOU?"

If they persist, tell them they have made you decide to go elsewhere to purchase what you want... and say it loudly so other customers/management can hear you.
