I have a 2001 Hyundai Accent 1.5 liter. I recently noticed that after idling between 5-10 minutes, there is noticeable blue smoke from the exhaust, when I step on the throttle. The engine does not smoke at all during normal driving, and only smokes after the long period of idling. The engine has relatively high mileage, about 155,000 miles give or take, but idles smooth, and has great driveablilty. There does appear to be quite a bit of blow by when idling, when I removed the oil cap. I did not notice a PCV valve during my quick look, there are however two hoses running from the valve cover to the plenum on the intake manifold, and the throttle body respectively. Anyone familiar with Hyundais have the same problem?

It is NOT the oil pump. It HAS oil pressure. Bad rings are a possibility, but the fact that it is an intermittent problem, I have kinda ruled rings out.

Could be the Valve seals possibly?

Why don't you have the compression checked on each of the cylinders. You can buy a compression checker for about $20. Remove each spark plug and attach the checker one spark plug at a time. Do not forget to disable the car from cranking up. All compression should be the same. If one is off 10 or more, then that's your problem.

The smoke is from wear on the engine. Most likely the piston rings. I expect it smokes while you drive it but you just don't notice it as much as you do when you are stopped.

patrick p got it about right. Has nothing to do with oil pump. Blow by would put pressure in the crankcase and cause oil burn.

Eventually thats going to be a big problem. The oil pump is going down. Fix it now.
