I want good books about the religion.

Are there any authors I should avoid?

There are numerous books on Wicca at borders. I would suggest Scott Cunningham and Raven Grimassi to name just two. These are very reliable sources. You also might try the magick circle school online. (google it) It teaches eclectic wicca and is 100% free. Another good way to learn about wicca is to go to www.witchvox.com . From there look for your state and click on clergy. See if there is someone you can connect with in your area. Remember, just because it is published, doesn't make it true or right. And the net, especially chatrooms - even yahoo pagan chat- are full of pretenders and wannabees. We call them fluffies. Other authors - raven silverwolf, dorothy morrison, and laurie cabot. Good luck in your search. If I can help, IM or email.

Well, I'm an ex-Wiccan and ex-occultist, but here's some books I would reccomend.

Crafting The Art of Magic by Adian Kelly ( A Wiccan "Tradition Head")

The Triumph of The Moon
Stations of the Sun by Ronald Hutton ( A History Professor at Oxford University, and not easily dismissed.)

Witchcraft and Demonology by Montague Summers

The Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology by R.H. Robbins

The Myth of Matriarchal Prehistory: Why An Invented Past Will Not Give Women a Future by Cynthia Eller

The Genocide of Women in Hinduism By Sita Agarwal

Occult Bondage and Deliverance by Kurt Koch

Cracking Da Vinci's Code by James Garlow

And also these free sites:

http://usminc.org
http://spiritwatch.org

"11. As American Witches, we are not threatened by debates on the history of the Craft, the origins of various aspects of different traditions. We are concerned with our present, and our future. "

[Note this was written years before Kelly, Hutton, and others wrote their books. Wiccans had a collective cow when their history was exposed as fake. Most of them still can’t seem to accept it]

From what I've seen here, avoid Silver Ravenwolf. I know they often have a diverse selection of books on Wicca at Borders, but a Wiccan could probably recommend better than I .

I would avoid Borders and other chain stores. Not only do they put small bookstores out of business, but because they're aiming for as broad a customer base as possible, they primarily carry 101 books. Since they're the publishers' biggest customers, the publishers have to put out more 101 books to stay in business.

Look up the closest pagan/occult shop at the Witches of teh World section at http://www.witchvox.com - the shop owner/staff should have good recommendations for you. Barring that, order from http://www.magusbooks.com - they're an awesome shop based out of Minneapolis, and they carry a LOT of good books at all experience levels (plus they're not a chain store).

As for recommendations, I have a book review blog at http://lupabitch.wordpress.com that may be of use (check the left sidebar for links to other reviewers)

I was just there yesterday, and they had a good sized section on Wicca. I didn't get a good look, since I was looking for the language section.

while the last bit of Dr. Zoom zoom's post is largely nonsense, those are not bad book recommendations.

His claim that Wiccans don't know that Wicca is a modern invention is about 40 years outdated....only newbs claim otherwise...

Maybe he should say as an ex-Wiccan, ex-occultist and Ex-newb.

You might want to try Powell's Books in Portland, Oregon. They have a website that is pretty electic.

There are a few, but some people say to avoid certain authors. I think it depends what path you follow, and what beliefs you'd like to practise.

Those Who Practice Magic Arts

Webster defines magic as: 1 a: the use of means (as charms or spells) believed to have supernatural power over natural forces b: magic rites or incantations
2 a: an extraordinary power or influence seemingly from a supernatural source b: something that seems to cast a spell

The bible says, “Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God.” (Deuteronomy 18:9-13) No one that does these things will be blameless before God. God cannot look upon these acts. These acts are for the wicked. These acts are practices that the bible says not to do.

He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced sorcery and divination, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the LORD, provoking him to anger. (2 Kings 21:6) When people practice magic arts, then they are doing evil in the site of God. When people do evil, they provoke God to anger. When God is angry he pours out his wrath on you. You will not be blessed, but you will be cursed.

Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. (Revelation 22:5) This verse is comparing everyone who practices evil with dogs. Bible says magic arts are a false practice. When this verse is saying outside, it is talking about being outside of heaven. People who practice magic arts will not enter into the gates of heaven.

But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." (Revelation 21:8) All who practice magic arts will go to the lake of fire (HELL). This is what the bible calls the second death. God will judge all the wicked. The wicked will be judge at the white throne judgment.

If you are one of the people who practice magic arts God will forgive you. Just repent and turn from your wickedness.
