I have panic disorder, and I know one of the common fears is that you're going crazy. I'm having light spots in my vision, and I did talk to a psychiatrist about them, and he told me I should get my eyes checked, so I'm going to do that. My question is, how do you get over your fear of going crazy?

Also, if you can help with this one:I'm also very anxious about being left alone, even if I'm the only one awake and there's other people there (freaks me out to be the only one awake also)

thanks!

Panic and fears are two things that talk therapy can really help. Therapy is about understanding yourself better, learning what is behind your fears, figuring out how to work your mind and body together positively. These are two disorders that therapy has a fairly high "cure" rate. In addition to therapy, mindful exercises can help - marshal arts, tai chi, yoga, etc. For that matter, regular exercise and good nutrician can play a role as well. The best approach, however, is working with a therapist trained in anxiety disorders who you can respect and grow to trust.

I feel for you, Stephanie, and can assure you you are NOT alone....I have certainly had times of feeling like you describe, and I am sure other people have too. Panic attacks are horrible, but do not mean you are getting schizophrenia - people with real schizophrenia do not usually have any insight that they are ill, whereas you seem very much aware that things are not well with you.

It could be that if anything, you have a form of depression - are you taking any meds? - as there are some antidepressants that help also with feelings of panic or anxiety.

I wonder if you have recently been through some trauma or lost someone, as that can bring on feelings like this even some time later? From personal experience, I can tell you that losing a close friend a few months ago has brought back feelings of fear and aloneness I thought I had long since got over!

However, like her, I am a born-again Christian, and holding on to the truth that God is there with me, even when I can't feel any closeness with Him, makes a huge difference. (Have a look at my website www.healingprayer.co.uk, and drop me an e-mail there if you like.)

it definately sounds like your panic disorder is not under control. you need to work with your doc further to get a better handle on it. the fear of losing ones mind goes hand in hand with high anxiety/panic.

First of all calm down. You need to start finding positive exercises, to help calm you down. Practice your exercises at all times so you can use it as your straight. When you start to feel this way start counting to ten backwards, take slow deep breaths, create scenes of the beach in your mind. Talk to your psych doctor to help you find positive ways of coping.

Well, there is nothing to correlate your vision, with schziphrenia, persay...but if you think you are going crazy, you're not...anxiety can really fool you into thinking you have all kinds of illnesses,...you are just very insecure right now, and need the reaasurrance of family members, to be there for you...
