Interesting question, i will go and reead up on it and edit and enlarge this answer later.
In the mean time, it is interesting that Esau earlier sold his birthright to Jacob for a pot of lentils. However, he was angry when Jacob stole his father's blessing. The blessing might therefore be something different from the birthright.
Perhaps the birthright was the material inheritance, and although Isaac have grown rich, perhaps by that time he did not have that much stuff for Esau to inherit so he was not so bothered about it, but the blessing was when the father, the patriarch of his tribe, decided who would be his heir as the head of the family and the leader of the tribe. Part of his blessing said, "Be lord over your brothers, and may your mother's sons bow down to you."
And when Esau complained to him, Jacob said, "Behold, I have made him lord over you, and all his brothers I have given to him for servants, and with grain and wine I have sustained him. What then can I do for you, my son?"
Also, when Rebekah was pregnant and felt the 2 children fighting in her womb, she asked God why, 'And the LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger." '
But notice that when Jacob goes to meet his brother when he leaves Laban, he aends him all those presents and keeps calling himself "your servant" to his brother, and also when he meets Esau, instead of Esau bowing down to Jacob, Jacob bows down to Esau. So in the end, because he took matters into his own hands and tricked his father and stole from his brother, he becomes his brother's servant instead of God's prophecy or the father's blessing being fulfilled.
Still, his behaviour shows that Jacob has learnt his lesson about cheating and stealing and is sorry for it. But he still makes the same mistake as his parents: showing favouritism. He favours Rachel and Rachel's son Joseph over Leah and Leah's children, and this leads to rivalry between his wives, and between his children, which leads to Joseph being sold as a slave to Egypt. Jacob is punished for this by losing his son Joseph, who he thinks has died, but when at the end of the story he is willing to let Benjamin go to Egypt for the sake of saving his other sons from starving, he shows that he has also learnt to treat them equally, and is then rewarded by finding that his son Joseph is also alive and well.

Remember Jacob had Esau's birthright before and now he's getting his blessing too? Jacob was a tent-dweller, or a mama's boy. Esau was the hunter.
Oh, note that the blessing was "the wellness of the land" which is what Jacob stole. Esau's blessing was the "fatness of the land."

I think it was twisted way of things. The father should have given the blessings for the both of the boys. Mother never saw Jacob anymore. That is so sad. God does not want us to scheme.
