Nope, reading a recruits mail is not allowed.
As said above, packages will be opened in front of a DI for reasons which are obvious.
When one of my regimental buddies was in training while I was working in Paris, France. I sent him a "dirty" french postcard every day. Did he ever get teased, but everyone thought it was funny. (the head DI send me a thank you note.)

Im Army, but one of my drill sergeants almost got in trouble because a trainee saw him reading an letter and thought it was a trainees letter. It was actually a letter addressed to him. They almost started a 350-6 investigation over the incident. They are pretty serious about not reading mail.
They will inspect packages. Too many people have tried to send cigarettes, candy, cell phones, even drugs in the mail. When a package comes in, the trainee opens the package right there in front of the drill sergeant. Even a box of laundry detergent is emptied and repacked in front of the drill sergeant. But the drill sergeant does not open it, only looks to make sure there is no contraband.

When I was in the only thing that got opened was things that seemed to contain more than just a letter like a care package or a thick envelope. when that occured the recruit opened the package in fromt of the drill instructors so they could see what was in it and any contraband was confiscated and food had to be shared with the rest of the platoon and eaten on the spot.
the best mail call I remember was when a guys girlfriend wrote "I love you" all over the outside of the envelope and the Drill Instructor made the guy lick the writting off the envelope. I took him forever...

Marine Drill Instructors ( not DIs') have a sense of humor too.
They like to see what kind of mush is headed their way. Hence all the q's about what you need to do make Basic a rewarding experience you'll treasure the rest of your life. My personal fav was the cat wanted to know if he could mousse his "High and Tight". Dont worry.....keep your eyes foward, your ears open and say "SIR" before and after a sentence. Or in your case "MAAM!". Enjoy the ride "RECRUIT"

I was in Marine Corp boot camp six years ago, I never noticed that my letters had been opened or anything, but I would be very careful, with all the speculations of terrorism and everything, things may have changed.

They will not open they mail you send to him. Unless it is really heavy and all they will do is make him open it in front of them but they will not read it. So just send him 1-2 pages letters to prevent any unwanted attention on his part.
