Are you sure you don't have an upconverting player? (it scales SD DVDs to HD resolution)

In the front, your player should have the "HD DVD" Logo.

If it is indeed an HD DVD player and can't play HD DVDs. then there is something wrong with either the player or the disc.
Can it play regular DVDs? If yes, then the disc is the "problem."

DVD and HD DVD are two different things. The way they are made and more importantly the way they are read are different. The HD DVD uses a different laser to read the information on the disk. The same thing goes for the blu ray which uses a blue laser. Long story short you need a HD DVD player in order to play the disk. They look the same but they are not.

It says on the front of most HD DVD disks "will only play on HD DVD player" It's a complicated techincal answer but basicly only HD DVD players can read the information on an HD DVD. So you might as well return it unless you plan on buying a soon to be obsolete HD DVD player.
