Hi all,

My boyfriend and I have 2 1 year old cats, the one who im talking about today is a male and is usually a very quiet scared cat. Today, he was playing in the back yard and he was near a bush that had thorns on it. We're still not sure if he hurt himself off the bush but my boyfriend called him inside he came in my boy friend checked his back paw for injuries as he was licking his paw like crazy. He was holding him for about 5 mins and then the cat just locked onto his hand (bit him) and scratched all down his arms. He was also hissing and my boyfriend was (and still is) in really bad shock. We cannot figure out why this happened and were terrified it may happen again!! He is neutered so he couldn't be in heat!

This is completely out of character for him, why did he do this??

Also my boyfriend has had a tetnus shot but still feels a bit ill/shocked as in nausea could this be from the bites?

Thanks all vey much in advance.

No he's not in heat, males don't go into heat only females do.

It sounds like he was in pain enough to strike out, not caring who was holding him. There's possibly a piece of thorn or broken glass or anything in his paw and between trying to deal with that and being held, he just lost it. They panic sometimes like that.

Let the cat calm down. LISTEN when he hisses or growls, that's his warning signs, and watch to see if the paw swells in the next 24 hours. If the cat can get the thing out on his own, good. If the paw gets hot to the touch, swells up badly, or he doesn't want to walk on it, you should have a vet take a look and try to get whatever it is out before infection sets in too strongly.

Make sure to have your boyfriend use hydrogen peroxide on the bite and scratches, so they don't get infected. Tetanus shots are good for 10 years so that's not a problem but you want to make sure the bite especially doesn't get infected.

Nausea shouldn't be a symptom, but stress may cause that in your bf. Make sure the wounds were washed good with soap and water too.

You're cat might have been annoyed he was being held for so long. Cats really like personal space and being held for too long can promote some anger.

Perhaps the kitten got a thorn in it's paw and acted out of pain and anger and you just couldn't see the thorn.

Either way, just have your boyfriend pet the cat and calm it down. If this happens again, call your vet and ask him/her.
