The problem is that they have become so prevalent in street fighting in cities all across the country, leading to all kinds of indiscriminate breeding and aggression problems.
The shelters are FULL of Pitts. They rarely get adopted. Most are put to sleep. It is not just in "some other" place. It is in every major city and virtually every state.
I don't have the answer, but we have to do something. All Pitt owners need to open their eyes. If you really are responsible owners, become activists for protecting these dogs, not from government, but from the people who are destroying this breed with their irresponsible actions.
People are so intent on defending the breed (and their individual dog) that some refuse to see that there is a big problem happening with this breed right now.

Pitbulls have been known to be very dangerous animals. The thing is that this dog has a very hight bite strenght. Ok, maybe that is not the right terminology but you get my meaning. When a pitbull bites that is pretty much it to what ever they get a hold of. They can even take cows down. I've seen pitbulls pealing off coconuts for fun. That was impresive in my eyes. They also say that pitbulls tend to be damage in the brain. I don't know if this is true or not but it is a potentially dangerous animal if its not handdled correctly. Remember that there are many breeds of dogs and each breed has its own behaviors. Some animals are good with kids while others are not. Some are high energy while others aren't. Most people are not trained to handle or know how to control and handle animals so the dog is a liability. If you are the dog whisperer then you probably can have 100 pitbulls all your life and never have nay problems. However, the rest of us are not that knowledgeable in that field. This is why the dog is being banned. It is not that all pitbulls are dangerous but this particular breed is known for being problematic.
Remember that the law does not have to be right. What happens is that enough people complaint about something so the law has to do something just to show that they are doing their work. SO, what is the simplest solution to the problem. The easiest and cheapest is to banned the dog. IS it the best answer? I don't know but if there are no pitbulls around then that is one less worry. This is the way the law works. Doing something is better than ignoring the problem if there is a problem at all.

Some places around the world have banned the breed or put severe restrictions on them and many places have more than one banned breed or are pushing for adding other breeds. In America, some counties and cities have banned the breed and other cities and communities are jumping on the current cult trend of focusing on and banning a breed only now they are actually DOING IT. Google "Breed Specific Legislation" and you can find orgs. that are working to STOP THE INSANITY.
In Colorado, the whole state has banned the breed. I know of one family that was transferred to Colorado and owned a pit bull dog. When the ban was passed, they were forced to either give up their dog or have it taken away, and euthanized, just because of it's breed! This was a well behaved family dog whose owners were professionals. (not that you have to be a professional to own a dog and be a good owner, but it shows that many different types of people own the breed, and most could not afford to do what this family did to get their dog to safety, so responsible owners in Colorado have had their dogs RIPPED from their families and EUTHANIZED just because of the breed) To prevent this, they called a relative who flew to Denver to pick up the dog and take it to a state to live with them because of the banning until the owners could transfer back out of the state to reunite with their dog. Colorado airport did not allow a Pit Bull Dog to be put on the jet to be flown with the relative to its temporary out of state home. So the people had to RENT A CAR and drive it to there!
So, yes, there is a concerted effort to ban the breed and a ground swell of supposed animal lovers that want a bunch of other breeds to be eliminated as well. In fact, some extremists are pouring a lot of resources into BSL because they would rather not see anyone own a dog or any animal and starting with the banning of one breed, more will surely follow.
The best thing to do is to be a responsible owner or a responsible citizen and let your local, state or government officials know that you oppose banning breeds but support enforcing laws that penalize owners that abuse or neglect any breed of dog owned, and penalties for people know to improperly contain their dogs (dogs that routinely jump fences, dig out and roam neighborhoods, subjecting them to being hurt or them possibly hurting an animal- like someones cat or even a person- chasing a bike or skateboarder for example).

Legaly they cant but there trying with is BS. Just shows where people dont understand the real problem. IF they did this with humans we would ahve alot of races not here even white people. Not all are bad but a few have have hurt the outlook on the race/breed.
Breed-specific legislation (BSL), or legislation or ordinances that single out specific breeds of dog for banning or strictures, is unconstitutional because it violates the 14th amendment of the constitution (commonly referred to as citizens’ civil liberties), particularly the equal protection and due process clauses. The 14th amendment states:
“No State shall…deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”
Just shows how government looks past laws to get what they want.

not that I'm aware of but if it comes to that you can belive I will be in the front lines of a war that the government WILL NOT win!!!!!!!!! I am fighting the county we live in right now because of them imposing a breed ban....I WILL NOT give up my dog or surrender to this communistic act !!!!!!! we live in America and yes I will agree we need tougher laws on animal issues and I'm all for spay/neuter laws but I will fight BSL with everything I have!!!! if APBT's are gone another dog will take its place and so on down the line till we have no more breeds to ban!!!!!!

wooper, incase you had a brain, try looking up the statistics on dog biting. The pit's that were in the accidents were raised in fighting... Now, try looking up the family pet who mauled the kid... You'll find more shepards and labs do the biting then.
Pit's are really really good with familys because they're very lovable and just want to love.
Scorpius59, Are you kidding me? That's what dogs do. My pit cuddles with our cat while the shepard tries to eat her. [not our dog, fiance's moms dog...] it's not a breed thing for a dog to hate cats, trust me. It's not just because that dog was really mean, or that the breed sucks. It's because that specific dog wasn't raised around other animals, or is just a really bratty dog. It happens.
So why not keep spreading rumors because ONE pit tried to attack ONE cat? That makes sense. Promise...

First of all, this is not the type of thing the federal government would get involved with. Regulations on pets is something that would be left to the states - and even to local communities. Furthermore, if they ban pit bulls as household pets, it shouldn't affect the dog(s) you already have.
Regardless of what pit bull owners say, there is ample evidence they are a dangerous breed. There are numerous examples of pit bulls attacking their owners for no obvious reason. You can say it's because the dogs were provoked or mistreated, but how come you almost never hear of a lab or collie or other breed attacking their owner. I believe banning pit bull ownership is a legitimate public safety issue.

They keep trying to pass a law that would make it illegal to breed pit bulls. That way, they dont have to go around killing them, they just eventually die off. I personally think it is horrible. Every dog has the possibility of being mean, it is just up to the owner and how they train/raise them. I think there are more cases of attacks by pit bulls because people buy/breed them just so they can have a bad *** guard dog, and its wrong.
