I believe in ALL the gifts of the SPIRIT. However, I don't believe that just anyone can receive these gifts. There are requirements. Notice this verse:

John 14:15  If ye love me, keep my commandments.
16  And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

Here, a condition must be met (verse 15), then JESUS will pray to the FATHER, and THEN will JESUS send the HOLY SPIRIT(verse 16).

So, without keeping GOD's Commandments, the HOLY SPIRIT will depart from us. Do those that claim to be "speaking in tongues" truly have the SPIRIT of GOD? Are they all keeping GOD's Commandments?

Much more can be said.

GOD bless

Speaking in toungues is one of the gifts of the holy spirit. Each person at the time they are "saved" supposedly recieves a spiritual gift to be used for God and to bring others to God, not to show off or glorify oneself. 1 Corinthians 12: 4-11 lists some of these gifts. Verse 7 says "but the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all". Verse 10 ends the list with "...to another different kinds of tounges, to another the interpretation of toungues." It is important that one go along with the other. Simply shouting out in toungues is useless if there is no one to interpret what is said. It is also important not to get too wrapped up in the idea of this one gift, as there are many spiritual gifts. A christian should pray to the Lord and ask Him to reveal to them what their gift is and to guide them in utilizing it according to His will.

In the first century, the miraculous gifts of the spirit, including the ability to “speak in tongues,” verified that God’s favor had shifted from the Jewish system of worship to the newly established Christian congregation. (Heb. 2:2-4) Since that objective was accomplished in the first century, is it necessary to prove the same thing again and again in our day?

In the first century, the ability to “speak in tongues” gave impetus to the international work of witnessing that Jesus had commissioned his followers to do. (Acts 1:8; 2:1-11; Matt. 28:19) Is that how those who “speak in tongues” use that ability today?

In the first century, when Christians ‘spoke in tongues,’ what they said had meaning to people who knew those languages. (Acts 2:4, 8) Today, is it not true that ‘speaking in tongues’ usually involves an ecstatic outburst of unintelligible sounds?

In the first century, the Bible shows, congregations were to limit the ‘speaking in tongues’ to two or three persons who might do that at any given meeting; they were to do it “each in turn,” and if there was no interpreter present they were to keep silent. (1 Cor. 14:27, 28, RS) Is that what is being done today?

No, but then there are many gifts and only one God.
When the Apostles received the Holy Spirit everyone there understood them, according to Acts, so this thing about people speaking in tongues but not being understood makes no sense to me.

I believe that people back in the first century CE had that gift and it was for a very specific reason...so that people of all nations could hear the good news of the kingdom of God in their own language. Since the apostles and the first followers of Jesus were mostly Jews, they did not speak the languages of the nations, therefore the gift of tongues enabled all those to hear what they were preaching and to understand it.

(Acts 2:1-4) “. . .Now while the day of the [festival of] Pentecost was in progress they were all together at the same place, 2 and suddenly there occurred from heaven a noise just like that of a rushing stiff breeze, and it filled the whole house in which they were sitting. 3 And tongues as if of fire became visible to them and were distributed about, and one sat upon each one of them, 4 and they all became filled with holy spirit and started to speak with different tongues, just as the spirit was granting them to make utterance.”

(Acts 2:5-11) “. . .As it was, there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, reverent men, from every nation of those under heaven. 6 So, when this sound occurred, the multitude came together and were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 Indeed, they were astonished and began to wonder and say: “See here, all these who are speaking are Gal·i·le′ans, are they not? 8 And yet how is it we are hearing, each one of us, his own language in which we were born? 9 Par′thi·ans and Medes and E′lam·ites, and the inhabitants of Mes·o·po·ta′mi·a, and Ju·de′a and Cap·pa·do′ci·a, Pon′tus and the [district of] Asia, 10 and Phryg′i·a and Pam·phyl′i·a, Egypt and the parts of Lib′y·a, which is toward Cy·re′ne, and sojourners from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cre′tans and Arabians, we hear them speaking in our tongues about the magnificent things of God.””

(Acts 2:41-42) “. . .Therefore those who embraced his word heartily were baptized, and on that day about three thousand souls were added. 42 And they continued devoting themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to sharing [with one another], to taking of meals and to prayers.”

Today, this is not necessary...we have God's completed word, the Bible to help us all learn the truth, and our faith is based on true teachings of the Bible...we walk by faith, not by sight.

No. There are no gods, and 'speaking in tongues' is just delusional behaviour.
