How does it work, I mean I know that it's the size of a small grain of rice and you put it on the back of you pet, but what happens if your pet is micro chipped and goes missing.

I've lost my kitten and I am so worried about him, he isn't micro chipped but, if I ever find him I might get him micro chipped.

My kitten is an indoor kitten.

Well, I hope you get your kitty back, it's so heart breaking to lose a pet and not know where they are...
As for the chipping, it's a great way to get your pet back. That is if the people that find your pet are honest!!
They put it under the skin on the back of the neck, and when they are taken to the vet, if they don't know who it belongs to, they scan over the whole of your pet to see if it has a chip. There is a number in the chip which has your info, and you will be called, that is if you still have the same address and phone number.
Good luck with your little kitty...

A microchip is a rice-sized chip that is inserted under the skin by the use of a needle. I've seen hundreds of animals be microchipped and I can confidently say that it doesn't hurt the animals one bit and you can't even feel it under the skin.

Basically, once your pet is microchipped, your information is entered into a database and associated with that specific microchip number in the system. Most places will put you in local registries for free, but you can register your pet with national registries for a fee as well.

Now, the way it helps you find your pet is that if they were to be brought into an animal shelter, vet's office, etc. as a stray, the workers could hold a wand of sorts over the animal's upper back and it would display the chip number on a little screen on the device. All they have to do is put the number into their system and VOILA! it pulls up your name and phone number and you are reconnected in no time!

I volunteer at a local animal shelter, and we are able to reconnect quite a few animals with their owners with the help of the microchip. I would highly suggest that everyone have their pets microchipped, even if they are indoor animals, and even if they're cats. We get in twice as many dogs as cats who have microchips. You never know when your pet can slip out, or what might happen in an emergency (or a natural disaster) if your pet was separated from you. It's a sad fact, but as a national statistic, only 2% of cats that come into shelters ever make it back to their families. If they were all microchipped, think how much higher the statistics might be!

In the meantime, check *every single day* and *in person* with your local animal shelter. Don't just call b/c as much as they might try, they see hundreds of animals every day and can't remember every one. Put up signs around the neighborhood if at all possible - your kitty might have been so eager to get back indoors that he ended up in someone else's house, and they might not even know how much you're missing him!

Hope you find the little guy!!!

It is a good idea to microchip pets weather they are inside/outside pets. If your pets escapes and is found by animal control or someone who takes it to a shelter, most animal shelters have a chip reader and the first thing they should do is scan for a chip. If it is present it gives all the info to have the pet returned to the owner.

A micro chip allows the animal to be scanned and then the owners information is retrieved from the micro chip.

The vet puts it in with a large bore needle, it only takes a few seconds (sort of like getting your ear pierced). It's pretty small, is glass on the outside so it's sterile and won't be a problem, and they put it into the back of the neck area. Most of them stay right there, but sometimes they can shift down into the upper shoulder of the leg, but both places are readable with one of the hand helds.

We got our cat microchipped. Basically if he is found the RSPCA can scan the back of his neck much like a barcode reader and it will bring up your details on the computer so he can be returned to you.Hope you get your kitten back.

Its just a small injection in the back of the neck and they read the "bar code" and find the kitty their owners.
We will keep you in our prayers and hope your kitty is back soon. God bless. Patti

micro chipping is a great idea to consider if you find your kitty...it will track it if you lose the cat... the vet will be able to track where it is.
