I served under seven Presidents. Only three have carriers named after them (Eisenhower, Kennedy and Reagan). Nixon has no Navy ship named after him, despite his being a Lieutenant Commander during World War Two. Same story and rank for Lyndon Baines Johnson. James Earl Carter III has a submarine named for him. There are now plans to name a new carrier after Gerald Rudolph Ford. At one time the carriers named for men restricted that list to those Presidents who had a profound effect on the Navy or had served as a Secretary or Under Secretary of the Navy (Theodore and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, e.g.). That rule seems to have been thrown over the side. We now have a carrier named for George Washington and the Navy was completely put out of existence during his time in office.
