They were a seasonal fruit with a rough skin similar to Conference pairs. They were my favourite and I havn't seen any for years.

Keep your eyes open for them re-appearing soon.
As a couple of others have said, their season starts shortly. At the end of September, according to the site below.
(By the way, I definitely remember seeing them in Tesco and Asda last year, so they're out there somewhere!)

As you say, they are seasonal, and one of my favourites too, lovely nutty flavour. I think they may have made a slight comeback in recent years with a demand for more varieties.

The season for Egremont Russet is Oct-Dec. so start keeping a watch for them soon. I have managed to find them in supermarkets and greengrocers, but they must be popular as they're never on the shelves for long.

fruits like russets are not compatible with supermarket shelving. it could be they arent quite round or the skin isnt shiny, maybe too difficult to shrink wrap and pack in little packs of equal size. . try to find mushrooms that are a little bit out of the ordinary. huh. no way.
sorry to go on but im fed up with supermarket standardisation and over packing.
you can buy any type of apple in france.

Yes, they will definitely be in the supermarkets soon, but you might find better ones in small farm shops - they aren't so fussed with standard sizes & packaging.
