I am a young healthy male and probably burn off about 5k calories a day... because that is about how much I eat and I don't gain weight :)

Here's a formula I use when I want to lose weight.

1) Take your weight, multiply it by 6.2
2) Take your height in inches, multiply it by 12.7
3) Add 65 to the results for numbers 1 and 2.
4) Multiply your age by 6.8.
5) Deduct this number from the results of steps 1 - 3.

This gives you your resting metabolic rate or RMR. This rate is what it takes you to just lie on a couch doing nothing.

Figure your activity level:

1.6 = Very High
1.4 = Moderate
1.2 = Couch Potato

Multiply your RMR by your activity level to tell you how many calories you use each day. If you want to lose weight, just eat less calories and exercise more. Good luck!
