Prayer is inspired by God. When you pray, you pray in the Spirit, which is only initiated by God, through a vessel of mercy, byway of the Holy Spirit.
When a vessel of mercy is moved to pray for something, the Holy Spirit relays God's decreed will back unto Himself.
If you're just going to pray for 'things', you may as well rub a lamp.

God almost always answers my prayers in subtle ways. For instance I'm a very shy person, as such I have little prospect of meeting any female friends... and this bugs me because I am very much straight and would very much like to meet my significant other. So I've prayed to God and while it has taken a while he has sent a couple of women in my life. I haven't yet met my soulmate but I believe in time I will meet her, because God is gracious to me. One of these two women may yet prove to be her, I do not know yet.
Other examples are very minor and yet even more subtle... such as not being able to find something in my house... like a pencil or something stupid lol (yes I talk to God alot and ask him for retarded things sometimes because of my human nature) and soon after I think out of the blue "check in your drawer" or whatever. God prefers working in subtle ways so that at least some faith is required - although occasionally He works so obviously that there is no way to deny it was His handiwork - this tends to happen more in third-world countries where needs are much greater than here in America. There are soooo many miraculous events that occur in places such as Africa that the media NEVER covers because... it just might convert people, and this wouldn't be acceptable *cough* Onoes.... Christians.... we can't have them brainwashing our kids even more!
You would never ever hear in the news about several kids praying over their dead mothers' body and she becomes revived... or how a muslim prays to Allah and instead of Allah, an angel of the Lord actually physically manifests himself to the muslim. It's sad how people want to deny the existence of God no matter how much evidence is provided, either physically, scientifically, or historically.

I prayed for something this year and it's coming true now, but I have also worked very hard myself to make it come true.

Today!
Actually we get positive answers all the time.
We are Jehovah's people and he loves us.
Look at Isaiah 43:10-11 for proof.
