I got a root canal and a crown put on a molar in march of 2007. It is now only Sept. and I suddenly feel a very sharp pain that goes away pretty quickly when i bite on something hot or cold. I looked at the tooth and the back of it appears to have a dark metallic line and the gumline. The front of the tooth looks perfect though and it doesnt feel loose. I called the dentist and they think it may need to be recemented. Isn't that going to hurt if it is already on pretty well? Could it be anything else? I have an appointment scheduled, I was just wondering if anyone experienced this before. Thank you.

Ok, I also noticed today that the "line" is now like a really shiny silver circlular area. I had xrays done as part a full exam 2 months ago and the dentist said everything looked fine in that area. I assume that the root canal worked, then...but i dunno lol.

It sounds like you have some gum recession in the area. I would try a sensitive tooth toothpaste for 2 weeks and see if that solves it. The dark line is the edge of the crown which has a metal band to it and may be showing because of gum recession. Use a soft toothbrush and gently clean your teeth for 2 minutes at a time.

Where is the dark metallic line at? If it is on the tounge side, that is supposed to be there. it is a part of the crown. Your bite may be off, and that may be why it is hurting when you bite down. They will probably check the way your teeth occlude, and do any adjustments. Hopefully it won't need recemented or replaced. An x-ray may be taken around the roots to see if the RCT worked.

REGARDING THE HOT/COLD SENSIVITY, ARE YOU SURE IT THE TOOTH NEXT TO IT THAT MAY HAVE RECEDING GUM?
THE DARK LINE IS PART OF THE METAL COLLAR OF THE CROWN. THIS IS NOTHING TO BE CONCERNED W/ITH. HAVE THE DENTIST EVALUATE THE TOOTH FOR THE PAIN.
