No, until you remove the soft buildup (plaque) and hard buildup (tartar) your gums will not fully heal and you will continue to have gingivitis. If you do not get rid of the gingivitis it can progress to a bone disease called periodontitis which you cannot heal. Overall it is not good for your total body health to have a chronic infection. Put it this way, if you looked down an saw a sore that never healed on your leg wouldn't you take care of it? Gingivitis is the same thing but doesn't look horrible or typically cause pain so it gets ignored. You might go to a local dental hygiene school for a lower cost dental cleaning and xrays if you need them. Hope that helps!

A good way to try to relieve gingivitis at home is brushing with an extra soft toothrbush, three times a day for three minutes. Try a warm salt water/baking soda rinse as well. Try not to use too much Listerine, as it can dry out your mouth. Floss daily as well.

IF YOU HAVE TARTAR AND PLAQUE UNDER THE GUMS, ONLY SCALING WILL BE EFFECTIVE.
WHY?
BECAUSE THE HARD TARTAR DEPOSITS ARE UNDER THE GUMS AND MUST BE PHYSICALLY SCAPED OFF USING SPECIAL DENTAL INSTRUENTS.
