I would love to have a truck...but the gas is ridiculous. Depending on what you are going to use the truck for will help decide. If you just want a truck just because...well then you should look into the Ford Ranger with the four cylinder. You could also look into a Chevy S10 or Chevy Colorado also. If you are going to be hauling heavy loads or towing then it would be a poor decision to get a small truck with a small engine. There are no trucks that will get great gas mileage...but the trucks that I listed will get the best out of any other trucks. Pretty much your best bet is a four cylinder truck... Best of luck.

My 1981 VW truck with a transplanted turbodiesel from another VW has gotten as high as 52 mpg on the highway. I average about 45 though. Being 26 years old it tends to be pretty high maintenance.
My old F150 with a 351W has gotten 21mpg on the highway. Much less around town. 25 years old, it likes mechanical attention too. Older vehicles just require more care.
One truck a lightweight runaround, one a moderately heavy hauler.
A truck big enough to haul heavy loads or tow them just isn't going to get good mileage. A small light truck will be limited on how much work it can do. A midsize truck is a compromise of both.
If you are looking at buying a new truck, you can compare mileage ratings here- http://www.fueleconomy.gov/

My 96 F-350 Powere Stroke Diesel gets 22 MPG on the freeway, a lot better than even a little useless ranger or S-10 type truck or any Gas Powered fullsize truck. If you need a truck that will do some work, nothing beats the power, strength, economy and longevity of a Diesel.

The best you'll ever get with the words "truck" and "good gas mileage" is the 2008 Ford Sports Trac: http://greenwayford.com/images/edmunds/VEHICLE/2007/Ford/100500279/20029901-E.jpg It gets up to 22 mpg. Check out the specs, pictures, and comparisons here: http://www.fordvehicles.com/suvs/sporttrac/?searchid=426441|15932595|80551400
These are advantages is has over its competition:

If you are really desperate with gas mileage, then check out a 2008 Ford Ranger. It gets up to 29 mpg, but is a little small: http://www.fordvehicles.com/trucks/ranger/

There is no such thing as "a truck with the great gas mileage" - it's an oxymoron. Since you love ford, my advice is likely wasted but among trucks, there is no competition with Toyota in terms of reliability, resale value, and gas mileage. Feel free to ignore.

First you have to get your expectations in line. "powerful" truck equals "fuel hog" no matter if it is Ford, Chevy, Toyota, etc. If you are planning ot snow plow, you better do some research on insurance. Hit one parked vehicle or damage someone's property and you are not properly covered and you are only 16............ Another option is used SUV. Tons of SUVs sitting on used car dealer lots. YOu can probably find 5-6 year old model for $10k. Not sure what you are hauling but you can always get a tow hitch and small trailer. Most have a V8 option.

Gas hybrid like the GMC or Chev is marginally better---diesel is best way to go.

Customer of mine had a 99 Chev dualie diesel and pulling a 30 foot trailer got 28 MPG highway.

I have an 07 F-150, 4.6L V8. Add duel exch. and cold air intake, along with power programmer, will get you about 20 mpg avg. Nissan 05 and on has 260hp and gets 20 as is.
