I was in the Marine Corps myself, but honestly, I can't remember a time that I was in uniform off base for any reason. But last week I was at a festival and I saw FOUR Marines in their service Alphas, each with a big mug of beer. Not only that but they were outside without their coves on. I think the highest ranking person was a Sergeant, but I cant remember. What are the rules regarding this?

Yes, Marines are allowed to drink in public in uniform. The reason's noted above i.e. NOV 10, weddings, etc. are all great examples. Cammies are NOT allowed off base at any time, unless traveling to or from work. As far as covers go, cover goes on when you are outside, off when inside. If you are "under arms" or packing heat for you civilians, you leave your cover on inside, and this is also the only time a Marine will salute inside. Hope this helps.

Yes you can drink in Uniform provided you are off duty and the Uniform is allowed for leave and Liberty.

I know the Alphas are and I believe the Service Charlies are.

For the Dress Uniform I believe you can in the Alphas and Bravos not certain about the Charlies or Deltas.

Also just think how many are drinking the night of The Marine Crops Birthday Ball.

Best bet would be to check out the books for the BST Testing in the uniform section for the answer it will let you know for certain. Also the Uniform Orders will probably stae if any are for certain.

There has never been an army in recorded history that could not drink while in uniform (unless it was against their law to drink period)

Of course a Marine can drink while in uniform. It just isn't any longer common to be in uniform when off duty like in the past.

4. Drinking on Duty. Soldiers and civilian employees are prohibited from being served or
consuming alcoholic beverages while on duty. Between 0730 and 1630, Monday through
Friday, alcohol servers on post will remind any patron in military uniform of this policy. The
first general officer in the chain of command may grant exceptions tot he policy against drinking
on duty for all personnel for special occasions such as organizational days and holiday parties
per AR 215-l) para 7-l 4h. In addition, although underage drinkers may, with permission, drink
toasts, they cannot consume alcohol beverages (which include malt beverages) at activities such
as organizational days or promotion parties. Intoxication, fighting, loud music, and other
nuisance behavior will not be tolerated.
(KRS 222.202) prohibits the consumption of alcoholic
beverages in public places and private or public conveyances. Public places and private or
public conveyances include, but are not limited to, bus depots, laundromats, public streets, parks,
parking lots, automobiles (applies to both drivers and passengers), taxicabs, and busses. The
prohibition does not apply to a’public place with a license to sell alcohol by the drink.

Last I knew Marines were NOT allowed to drink in any uniform but i have been out a few years now.... and as for the covers, I was under the impression that as soon as you step outside a door way the cover goes on and it goes off as soon as you step in doors..... I think they were just a very poor example of how a marine should be acting in public!

Yes they can, providing they do not exceed the limit or become so intoxicated that they would embarras the corp. The regulations forbid any military personell to drink if they are on duty, off duty is a different matter...but if they are put on notice not to drink because of deployment then it is a no no. I served in the military, stationed in Germany and Iearnt the military law before I went beyond my limit for anything...Under the Influence of alcohol when on duty cost one dearly, up to 90 days in the Military jail.

I know in the Army it depends on what it is and if they were on duty or not.

Most of the time, those rules are directed by local camp, fort or base's policy and not a service policy.

I imagine its probably the same for the Marines.

Of course they can. They are not asked to do so, but it is promoted not to drink in excess anytime. Marines are people just like everyone else, it's their job that makes them special. Next time you see a marine out in uniform if you can offer him a beer, and say thanks.

They are in special circumstances. Such as my cousin was getting married, his best man was a marine and they were in uniform and they drank. It depends on the circumstances. If it isd a party it is acceptable but you can't get wasted drunk. That is not acceptable in any branch of the military.
