mutt (mt)
n. Informal
1. A mongrel dog.
Noun 1. mutt - an inferior dog or one of mixed breed

mon·grel (mnggrl, mng-)
n.
1. An animal or a plant resulting from various interbreedings, especially a dog of mixed or undetermined breed.
2. A cross between different breeds, groups, or varieties, especially a mixture that is or appears to be incongruous.
adj.
Of mixed origin or character.

These are the definition in the dictionary so why do people get angry over the use of these words and why do the BYB that breed mutts get angry when you point it out? Even if they are using two pure bred dogs to create the mutts, the pups they produce are in fact MUTTS. So with all the mutts dying in shelters why deliberately create more?

No, I am sorry but it is 2 or more different breeds.

Nobody is saying a mutt is bad but it is bad that people deliberately create them and charge a lot of money for them.

Melinda, did you read the definition? It is not my definition, it is from the dictionary but I guess YOU would know better.

Help, I do not breed at all, I prefer not to be part of the problem and I do not need to make my dogs into living ATMs.
You really should read the definition of the word mutt, once again it is a cross between different breeds so that means you breed MUTTS. I would like to see some proof about mutts being heathier than pure breds. The only reason you can say that is because breeders such as yourself do not do the necessary health and genetic test that pure bred breeders do and there is no record kept on the health and genetic issues that are suffered by mutts. You can find out the truth by going to the vet offices in your area and ask. It is not true that mutts are heathier.

Oh yes I very well understand the definition of the word. I also understand getting ripped off when I'm getting ripped off. NOTHING is wrong with mutts OR with pure breeds. But when it's a mutt I'm getting I don't like getting ripped off when there are perfectly good, well deserving mutts sitting in shelters and waiting to either be adopted or put to death. Hands down those will be my 1st, and ONLY choice.

Sorry to all who think a goldendoodle or a labdoodle are any of these dogs are real breeds and support them, but truth is none of these 'breeds' are by definition a true breed as they do not breed consistent to any standard. Maybe the confusion isn't so much the definition of a mutt, but the definition of what makes a breed a breed. Hmm..they have to breed true and consist to a set standard..meaning they all look and behave to something you can count on if you are a ethical breeder and conforming to a set breed standard. As they don't fit the definition they cannot be called a breed, hence a mutt

There's a sucker born every minute. I'd never say a mixed breed dog is anything more than a mutt, and mutts aren't bad. But getting ripped off is

ADDED:
Hello out there! You aren't getting it if you can't understand why 'designer' dogs are getting looked down upon. It's got nothing at all to do with mixed breed dogs OR the fact that these are mixed breed dogs. It's got everything to do with these people calling them a BREED. I wouldn't have nearly the problem with it if they called a spade a spade and didn't lie about it. Anyone who tells you they are a breed either doesn't know or understand what makes a mutt a mutt or a breed a breed or they are flat out lying. Here are a couple popular mixed breed sites I found. I give you the links so you can see for yourself they are, in fact, calling it a breed. I rest my case LOL

Mutt Definition

I really don't know why the whole "mutt" thing is a nasty word to some people. It is just a definition, like dog or human. In fact, I am a mutt - 100% pure mutt!! My heritage is English, Welsh, Scottish, Irish, and Spanish; you don't get more muttish than that. Is it bad that I am a mutt? Nope, it's just a fact.
The definition of a mutt is a dog that is not 100% purebred and can be any mixture of 2 or more breeds.
I have a mutt, I like mutts, I AM a mutt. Why people feel they need to say that their dog is a "designer" breed, I don't know; a mutts a mutt and not 'designer'.

All you say is true. Long before many of the so called "pure breeds" were pure, they were mongrels also. Many of the breeds we have today were "created" by breeding of different types of dogs. This is done by persons that know every detail of the breeds they are using, the history of the dogs they are breeding, and what genes they need to produce whatever they are trying for. Not by the lay person deciding to breed your dog with mine to see what we will get. That kind of breeding produces different variations in the same litter. Like some with long hair, some with short, etc.

That is not to say that these animals don't make nice pets. But why produce more and more animals out of curiosity. Many of which will end up homeless or having to be put down. The animal shelters are Full. Go to the one nearest you and have a look. You will be shocked at the number and variety of animals they have. Please don't produce more. I currently have a yellow lab that I adopted from my animal shelter. I have had many so called "mutts" throughout my life. I have loved them all the same and some of them have been so darn smart too.

Of course you are right - why breed more when there is just about anything you want or could love just waiting for you to come take it home. You are rewarded with love and loyalty for the rest of the animal's life - what more could you want?

No one in their right mind is blaming the mixes, or mutts, for being mixed. It is the carelessness of people who cause this in the first place - and the dogs can be wonderful pets. There is just no reason to breed more while even one is facing euthanasia in some kill shelter or waiting endlessly even in a non=kill rescue.

Katherine, it doesn't take 3 to make a mutt, it is
ANY cross or mix breed. No such thing as 2 breeds making a new "designer breed" like a cockapoo - please don't perpetuate the lies back yard breeders and puppy mills are trying to get clueless people to buy into, literally.

What I don't like is people calling mixed breeds "designer" breeds. Mixed breeds have been around for a very long time, long before people started calling them designer dogs. I have a maltese/chihuahua mix that I got from a rescue orgainization, but I wasn't worried about what breed I got, more what dog I got. Someone at work got a bulldog/bassett hound mix that she paid over $1000 for. She was saying how the pet store she got him from said this is a "new breed" because they haven't been getting them that long. Come on, now. As long as there have been bulldogs and bassett hounds, there have been bulldog/bassett hound mixes around for quite some time. Maybe they haven't been planned that way, but calling them a breed doesn't change what they are. What happened to this female dog of this breed just happened to be around a male dog of this breed and this is the result?

Reality is:

There are people in this world who cannot face the truth. Even worse, they lie to themselves.

Lie to themselves about whether they can care for a dog adequately (I can't AFFORD a Vet.. I can't AFFORD high quality food).. yet they breed dogs.

Lie to themselves about the fact that what they own is a MUTT bred from parents who were NOT high quality dogs (because if they were quality dogs they wouldn't be being used to create mutts... no owner of a Champion is going to let it be used to create mutts).

They want to make $$$
They want to lie to themselves that none of THEIR pups will end up in a shelter or a rescue
They are simply selfish and putting their own interests first.

EDIT: MUTT IS NOT A BAD WORD!!! Nor is B*TCH!!! They are simply statements of fact. Its like someone deciding "cigarette" is a bad word. Its a WORD nothing more.

Edit II: Believer... "from champion lines" is byb or puppymill speak for "the breeder said it was pet quality but someone decided to breed it anyhow" The Champion is usually 4 generations back.... Frankly, this is ONE of the reasons why I do not like limited registration and enforce spay/neuter before someone gets any registration AT ALL on pups I've produced. HELP... get some.

Ethical: of or relating to moral principles or the branch of knowledge dealing with these.

When does it become immoral to attempt to create a new breed? Why is it ok for a guy 100 years ago to create a new breed because he had a vision, and not ok for a person today to attempt to create a breed. What gives you the right to say that I am unethical even though I health test our dogs, feed only the highest quality food, vaccinat regularly, socialize, exercise, and love my dogs? Who made your opinion the RIGHT and only opinion of what makes a dog worthy of passing on its genes even when the dog in question is healthy, social, and in mine and many others option beautiful? I have yet to hear a Dog Snob give me a good answer to these no-brainer questions.

Somewhere along the line, mutt or mongrel got the connotation of a nasty word - like fcker or penis brain . . . but it's not. My dogs are all mongrels or all mutts. It doesn't mean that they suck, it doesn't mean that they are "less" of a dog, it simply means that their parents are of different breeds.

I don't get offended when people call them mutts

Hey - my old neighbor had a cockapoo and his name was Muttley - how funny is that??!!

It need not be a dirty word!
