I want my kids to only be able to access a few applications. I can't seem to figure it out. Having a separate user account seems to only limit what they can do to the system.

Is there a way to limit what apps they use - even with a third party product?

To put it simply... Windows Home Edition is not good for much, especially not for what you need...

You can try using programs like net nanny or cyber cop but they are extremely easy to subvert... especially if you have a kid who's smart and there's something they really want to get at.

If you upgraded to windows server you could fine tune things and set group policy on the machine and limit the login accounts and what they would have access to.. such as not being able to disable anti-virus, etc.. you may even be able to block sites (assuming you know what the sites are you want to block).

You may want to also want to just have a talk with them. I find that good security awareness helps people understand why security is necessary, helps get them involved in security, and makes them try to subvert security less. This may not work as much with children but I think it's a place to start.

Once they are on the internet... there's not much you can do to keep them from doing what they want to do.. you can only educate them and make them not want to do those things...

Good luck.
