I don't know, maybe because they take it as an affront to their intelligence and think that the person making the charge is calling them stupid and looking down on them.
I'm "brain washed" and glad of it.

It doesn't only apply that religious people are the ones who don't like to be called "brainwashed", no one does, and it is very rude, and demeaning...it is also very false. It is a combative comment, and therefore said with the intent of causing upset. Most of us have gotten over allowing people who say those things to influence our feelings...not worthy of upset...

It is meant to imply stupidity, though those saying it do not recognize it in themselves.
Thinking about it, a true Christian has had a wash and rinse. We are free from old worldly thinking of selfish behavior, of worry what the future holds as we watch the news. Our eyes are opened as to the condition of the dead, as asleep, so we aren't hampered by worry of torment for ourselves or family. We see the harmony of all the scriptures in giving us an accurate view of God and His purpose. We are unburdened by stupid theories that can not be explained other than a mystery such as 1+1+1=1.
Yes, it took a lot of scrubbing, but my mind is washed clean from the fear living in ignorance causes and has that fluffy clean smell that accurate knowledge of the Bible brings.

Because it carries the negative connotation that one is mindlessly following their religion. For the majority of religions this is not true. Most persons make a conscious choice to follow their religion.
In my own case, I know that my God does not want mindless worship but wants me to serve him with my power of reason. (Romans 12:1)

Because they know it's true.
It's very easy to brainwash (or, as we fancy people like to say, indoctrinate) someone when they are young. If you teach a small child something and no one around them contradicts it they will be likely to believe. That's why there are so many cradle catholics, really why we baptise babies.
They are brainwashed, it's quite easy to tell. my own mother cannot comprehend people not believing in Jesus, or even God. She just can't. That's brainwashed.
That's why they don't like the people who broke away after being indoctrinated, it shows them that people are stronger than that, and their system is flawed.
The word brainwashed is also not very nice, people associate it with cults. No one really wants to be called that.

They don't get upset. Because they know that they are the ones who have the spirit and the mind of Christ and the helmet of their salvation protects their way of thinking. So it is people like you who on the other hand have the spirit and mind of Satan and he is the one who possesses the minds of those who are outside of Christ Jesus the Lord and King. This is why when one is reborn by the power of God's holy Spirit, they are to study and meditate in the written word of God to give them a sound mind and to also have the peace of God which surpasses all understanding. People that belong to Satan think that the ways of God are foolish but to the contrary for it is the life in the Spirit that continues on in eternal life but those who are not reborn will die in their sins and will not enter the Glory of the Almighty but to the place prepared for Satan and his demons and those who receive his mark in order to buy or sell..Trumpetmin.org

You must admit that it is a rather insulting opinion.
As a Christian Preacher I have always maintained respect for those that choose to make a different decision when it concerns the Bible and faith in God.
It amazes me that others can't show the same courtesy that I do.
It may be that I don't agree with the choices of others but I respect their right to make that choice.

Its human nature. "Brain washed" is a derogatory term that implies a certain level of stupidity. Its meant as an insult and taken as an insult. Its not that religious people take offense at you questioning their faith, its that they take offense at you insulting them.

well there is 2 side to this.
yet..the truth is..the words of GOD does wash us!
wash our soul(emotion, brain,will, mind)
so in truth..we are brainwash CLEANSE..
while your is still dirty..defiled..imooral..ect.
