My mom hates to cook. She has no patience at all for it. She cooks everything on HIGH, whether on the stove or in the microwave. I got used to blackened grilled cheese sandwiches and tough, burned pancakes (or sometimes they'd be dark with runny insides). My ex husband and his mom would just stick TV dinners in the microwave and punch random numbers and cook it til it was burnt. So, there are people who don't know how to read a box. My ex husband and his mom both have dyslexia, and that might be why they ignore the directions printed on boxes.

I had a friend that could not use a recipe to save her life, but she could concoct delicious foods just by "throwing stuff together". She had an instinct for cooking -- and I find that to be very rare. She is ADHD, and I think she forgets where in the process she is and ends up adding things twice or not at all.

What is even more rare --in fact scarce -- these days, is a person who has the intelligence and capacity to follow written recipes and to modify them. They also can eat a food one time and be able to create a duplicate plus a new and better version themselves. There are people who can create recipes from out of nothing and have them turn out perfect every time. (I'm describing myself).

Some people say that it takes a "knack" for cooking in order to do it well. I tend to agree since I've known too many people who couldn't cook anything beyond spaghetti.

One time, my mom was asked to bake a cake for a church function. She and my sister made it and, instead of grabbing flour, my sister grabbed corn flour. It's the last time my mom was asked to bake anything for anyone.

I don't know how it is for everyone else, but when I cook, I follow all the directions and krud and SOMETHING still ends up going wrong. I'm just not very good at stuff like that, I'm a walking tornado. I tried to heat something up in the microwave one time and it lit on fire!!

Some people just can't cook. It's like if I asked, "how can you not draw? you just paint what you see."

there's only one thing that I can make that actually tastes pretty good...chocolate chip cookies. Everything else[including mac n' cheese] just doesn't come out.

Hello:

I have always believed that some people just didn't grow up in a house where their mother or father taught them how to cook,so that is the reason why they don't know how to cook. I have been cooking basically every since I was a little kid,so it is second nature to me. I have been teaching my daughter to cook and I supervise her VERY CAREFULLY in the kitchen and of course I AM THE ONE who cooks things on the stove or in the oven for safety reasons.

I believe that it is CRUCIAL to know how to cook at least something simple, and some people have just never been able to cook very well even when they try to follow recipes,it just doesn't work for them.

I think people who say they can't cook are just to lazy to try! My boyfriend says the only thing he can make is peanut butter and jelly which does not even involve cooking just assembling! I think your right though anyone is capable of following a recipe. The only thing I have made that ended up tasting bad was because I added too much salt, it just overpowered the whole dish.

Cooking's just not their thing...they better stay away from the kitchen, leave more experienced people to cook and order take-out. I have friends who love good food but can't even make stuff in the microwave. Some people just aren't kitchen-savvy.

Yeah, I don't get that either. It's not if you can cook or not it's if you can follow a recipe or not, which is extremely easy. Even people sometimes say, stuff like, "Oh I wouldn't dare to try and make that! I couldn't bake that!" I really don't get it.
Just follow the recipe!

Sometimes when a person doesn't like another person it doesn't matter what they do it's not right.

Your bf may not like the woman, therefore nothing she does will suit him.

Maybe it just isn't the kind of food he likes.

I know when I'm stressed, things that I normally like, I don't like.

I've cooked things that came out right, but just didn't suit my taste, because it just wasn't what I really wanted.

I dont know either, because Ive been a good cook since I was 10. But if you put good ingredients together they SHOULD come out ok - but what (for instance) if you didnt know anything and boiled chicken livers for dinner. That would be disgusting and not anyone's fault, exactly...

I love to cook! But I think it is a knack...it can't be rushed and a person should have some common knowledge about simple food preparation...
