I've been taking Metronidazole for the last couple of days. Last night I had a really disturbing dream, and I remember the last time I had to take it (several months ago) I did then, too. Since it's the weekend, I can't call my doctor to find out if I should stop taking it. Last time, I called my doctor (a different one) and the receptionist told me they did not offer medical advice over the phone. Does anyone know if this is normal? Or should I stop taking it? I'm concerned because it says mental or mood changes could be a side effect, and I don't know if that includes disturbing dreams.

One of side effects of Metronidazole is having mental function or mood changes. It means it got some effects on CNS so I can tell that your having bad dreams is one of its consequences. If you are having bad dreams it could be a sign of some changes in your mental function. If you haven't noticed considerable effects in your mood or mental functions then that won't be a big concern but it will be worthwhile to see your doctor to have some alternatives.

Metronidiazole is known to cause side effects. But in case this is so, your doc could prescribe alternatively, TINIDAZOLE, which is much safer and free from any serious side effects.Basically, the side effects are a coppery taste in your mouth, nausea, headache and a mild rash on your body.As regards mental or mood swings,I am not sure about it.Besides mood swings or hallucinations, see if you suffer from any of the symptoms listed out above.Better,to be on the safer side, you can safely switch over to equal dose of Tinidazole, and thereafter consult your doctor. But remember, the side effects are nothing serious or fatal in themselves.
