It's "Don't ask, Don't Tell, Don't pursue, Don't harass". I agree with the not pursuing part of it, not harassing part of it, but If a servicemember is accidently outed, and in a critically under manned rating, why would the US Military kick them out over something so trivial?

But oddly enough, dirt bags that drink and get involved in alcohol related incidents are given second and third chances, but permanently labelled "dirt bags"

I'm gay and I don't go around the ship staring at other guy's privates.

How can we end this insitutionalized bigotry?

If you are on active duty as a Chief, I'm sure by this point in your career you have attended a couple of Leadership Schools, and had a few classes on Military Law.
Familiar with the UCMJ and the Manuals for Courts Martial. Since it is against the law, it will take an act of Congress to make a change, this would include the "Will of the people" to elect representatives that will make that change.
Also since the MCM is part of the Constitution, it would take a 2/3 majority of both houses. Not likely to happen any time in the near future.
There have always been and always will be gays in the military. Just keep your mouth shut, do your sworn duty, and obey regs and policy. You will be left to serve with honor and pride.
If that is not good enough, open your mouth. You will be gone and have no one to blame but yourself.
Thank you for serving your Country.

Unfortunately this issue will be argued for years to come the Ask Don't Tell Policy is full of controversy. But at this point in time the policy still holds there's not much anyone can do with this policy in place i was in the Army and i'm straight and yes there where gay soldiers gay/lesbian/bi but they only admitted it behind closed doors for the fear if they where found out the Army would kick them out . So as for the issue it's already under fire and it will continue as such for many years to come

I think the problem with the entire homosexual movement, as pointed out in some answers above, people are tired of hearing "I'm gay!" There is part of that movement that wants to be accepted in normal society, but what does normal society see.... Gay Day Parades and the part of the movement that doesnt want to be accepted in any society but have to tell everyone they are gay. They kind of shoot any notion of acceptance into normal society in the foot.

And from what I have seen, being gay in military doesnt mean much anymore unless they want to get out. I have seen some accidental exposures that were left alone, because it wasnt serious and gay person involved didnt push the issue of being gay.

You are a Chief Petty Officer who took an oath to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic and you never took the time to read the document?
Congress is the one who writes the regulations for the land and Naval forces. The reference is Article One, Section Eight in the Constitution.

If you are a Chief you probably been in for a while. You could consider joining groups and organizations that lobby for changing this policy in the Department of Defense, and encourage others to join (On your OWN liberty time).

Good Luck. Don't toss you career away by doing something irrational and without thought.

Dont tell me that you DON'T feel like a kid in a candy store chief. Personally I don't care if you play hide the salami with a fellow gay person. You signed a contract of "Dont ask...Dont tell" so cry me a river. As for the "Dirt Bags"....... what makes 1 group better than another chief? Could it be that you dont drink alcohol and find that everyone who does is a Dirt Bag?
Look...fly your multi colored flag (rainbow) somewhere else.

why does anyone have to know you are or are not gay? you don`t see hetero sexuals walking around telling people they are straight? do you? i don`t get gay parades or marches... you are what you are and that's that.. we don`t need to watch a parade of lesbians or gay men.... and as for straights? we don`t have a parade of straights. i personally don`t care if your straight, bi, or gay ..military or not...you can`t stop people from labeling that's just how we are..if you were gay going into the military then you knew what you were getting into so it is the way it is.. you can`t change the past, present ,or future...at least not in the military..

I would think you should wait until you get out of the navy, then get involved in organizations and political candidates that support your views. Like someone else said, please don't risk your career.
