This belief is based on the history of the earth being pummelled by a very large meteor every 50,000,000 years or so. The chances that the earth will be hit again within the next 50,000,000 years is probably higher than the odds of winning Powerball, but that isn't saying the event is imminent.
The last big event apparently didn't distinguish between dinosaurs who believed in god and those who didn't, so I doubt that the next one will be any more discriminating.

It's a cosmic inevitability .Sooner or later the Earth will get hit by a large piece of space rock that will once again cause what is called a mass extinction event.
The problem we have today is that the Earth is so densely populated that even if a small meteor [ 130' wide ] like the one that created Meteor Crater AZ, slammed into a large city at 28,600 mph , the effect would be devastating to both saints and sinners alike.

Lets think about it. Since your friend is a christian, and we KNOW how much christians care and believe in science, isn't it unlikely that they would have heard about some huge meteor heading towards earth when all the astronomers on the planet haven't heard anything about it?
The basis for your friend's belief is the same as the basis for ALL christian belief: They were told it by someone.
There's no meteor, if there was one Christians would be the LAST to hear about it, and if there was one and it DID hit us, then everyone is going to be wiped out. Everyone.
p.s. There are no 'sinners'. "Sin" is just another creation of the Christians invented in order to control human behavior.

Meteors are always hitting the earth. 1000s per year. Most burn up in the atmosphere. There is always speculation that a city sized one will strike and there is no way to detect it. It is dark in space and we can't see it coming unless we accidentally stumble across it's reflection of the sun. That only happens in movies. We will not be looking in the right direction anyway. Your odds. Roughly winning the power ball lottery twice, which is like being struck by lightening six times. Actually you have better odds at being killed like in that Showtime TV show on the Sci-Fi channel with Elizabeth Muthe and Mandy Patimpkin. She is killed by a toilet seat off a Russian space station falling to earth.

Jeeze...another uneducated christian...what a surprise.
Firstly, meteors don't GET "huge." They are tiny bits left behind by comet tails, & they bombard our atmosphere almost every day & night of the year. They are what people more commonly call "shooting stars," although this is a misnomer.
Scientifically speaking, the danger lies in a COMET hitting the Earth, which will certainly cause mass-devastation. It's happened in the past & it's sure to happen again--it's just a matter of when. This has nothing to do with some superstitious god & everything to do with astrophysics. Undoubtedly, however, superstitionists will use such an event to try to convince the rest of us that "god is angry" & "sinners will be punished." BS, however. The devestation caused by a comet does not discriminate in any way, shape or form. Don't listen to superstitionist lies & propaganda.

That has nothing to do with their christianity, but if I were you, I wouldn't ask this board, I'd ask the friend why they think that and what basis do they have for thinking so? How about checking out some real astronomy by going to the NASA website to see? If there was such a thing, though, believe me, the world's astronomers would know it, they would have detected it! It's very unlikely to be true, and it certainly isn't a mainstream Christian belief.

There is an asteroid that has a 1-in-60ish chance of hitting Earth on April 13, 2029.
If an asteroid the size of 2004 MN4 hit the Earth, it would do considerable localized or regional damage. It would not cause damage on a global scale.

Meteors are solid objects existed long before Christianity and will continue to exist. Science deals with those issues not religions. So if not declared scientifically you go to bed and sleep and grow up not to believe in things that cannot be proven scientifically. OK?

Someday, something big will hit the Earth, yes. It's happened before and it will happen again, especially as our solar system takes the downward trip into a band of ice and rock left from the formation of the Milky Way. http://abc.net.au/science/news/stories/2007/1942665.htm
But relax. There are several celestial bodies that NASA is watching that will come close, but as of yet none seem to be on a direct collision course. You know, we have had several near misses, and Jupiter's gravity has saved us many times.
Remember, we are on a lonely planet hurtling through space. :)

Yes, there is a meteor heading towards earth. Chill out. This is nothing new. It's supposed to miss. (think how vast space is) Take a look at Nasa's Near Earth Object Program.
