Legend has it, that every military post has one main flag pole who's truck, or finial (the ball on top) contains one razor, one match, and one bullet. In the event that the base is overthrown, someone is to dig around the base of this flag pole, find the .45 pistol, then climb the flag pole.
Next they are to use the razor to destroy the flag, the match to burn it, and the bullet to commit suicide to prevent being taken alive.
I'd like to know... Do you think this is fact or fiction?
I will post the truth after the question is closed ;-)
(to keep everyone guessing, only answer "fact" "fiction" "true" "false" etc... please :-D

The answer is 'NO'. It makes for good romantic, martial fiction though....

So the enemy are attacking the base, the enemy are going to capture the base and some brave but incredibaly dumb US soldier has to climb the flag pole, unscrew the ball at the tip of the flag pole and locate the matches and razor hidden there, then climb down with the flag, dig in the ground to find a hiden pistol, covered in rust or protective grease, thats had a loaded magazine in it since it was buried when the base was built (real good for spring compaction), use the pistol to hold the enemy off while he lights the matches and burns the flag and then commits suicide and dies like a hero!!!

Err why dose he not just cut the flag rope with his issue knife, take the flag and leg it to safety?

Suicide is not the American way.

its a little of both. I bet if you checked the truck on the old army bases you will find those items I don't think that it is true for the newer army base

No. It is a legend.

If it is a ball, it is a ball. If it is an eagle, it is an eagle.
