This site explains how to fix your gears (by adjusting your derailleur). It starts at the easiest problems that you can fix yourself and then goes into more in depth maintenance (some of which has been partly described by others). It worked for me.

As long as the shifter is working properly, then you probably just need to lube the pivot points and adjust the cable to make it tight.
Don't mess with the adjustment screws. If they've already been toyed with, then it'd be a good idea to start from scratch and set them properly, but chances are they were ok to begin with.
Make sure the shifter is clicked all the way in and the chain is on the smallest ring. Where the cable housing enters the shifter, you should see a barrel-screw adjuster there. Screw it all the way in, then back it out a half turn. Next, loosen the cable bolt at the derailleur and pull the cable tight. Tighten the bolt. Hold the derailleur in place by hand, and use your other hand to pull hard on the cable to seat everything in tight....then loosen and retighten the cable bolt again.
This should get you where you need to be. If the cable gets slack again after a few shifts, you can unscrew that barrel-screw adjuster a little to tighten it up. If your limit screws are ok and the shifter is working like it should, then this should be all you need to do. Be sure to lube the pivot points with a light oil....makes it work smoother and really helps when you shift from a large ring to a smaller one.

You probable need to adjust the cable tension. If you want to try this your self go to the library and they should have a repair book. Or look in the phone book for a shop. These thing,s don't cost much as a rule. That would be the thing to do if you don't know much about such thing,s. That way if it dont work right you can take it back until they get it right.

There is an adjustment screw that allows the shifter to move more to one side or the other to get it to change gears. If you can't find it, and there's nobody you know who has a bike, take it to any bike shop, where they will most likely "fix" it for free.

If you are stuck on the smallest front sprocket you probably don't have enough tension on your shifter cable. Have you had the cable tightened up since you got the bike? If not, it's probably stretched a little. Turn the barrel adjuster on the shifter and see if that helps.

as long because of the fact the shifter is working precise, then you certainly possibly in basic terms could desire to lube the pivot factors and regulate the cable to make it tight. do not mess with the adjustment screws. in the event that they have already been toyed with, then it may be a solid thought to start up from scratch and set them precise, yet probability is they have been okay before everything. make helpful the shifter is clicked each and each of ways in and the chain is on the smallest ring. the place the cable housing enters the shifter, you are able to desire to ascertain a barrel-screw adjuster there. Screw it each and each of ways in, then decrease back it out a nil.5 turn. next, loosen the cable bolt on the derailleur and pull the cable tight. Tighten the bolt. carry the derailleur in place via hand, and use your different hand to pull stressful on the cable to seat each thing in tight....then loosen and retighten the cable bolt returned. this could desire to get you the place you prefer to be. If the cable gets slack returned after some shifts, you are able to unscrew that barrel-screw adjuster slightly to tighten it up. in the experience that your decrease screws are ok and the shifter is working like it may, then this could desire to be all you are able to desire to do. be helpful to lube the pivot factors with a gentle oil....makes it artwork smoother and extremely facilitates once you shift from a extensive ring to a smaller one.
