Yeah, in California they do, but they are being sued for it as 'discriminatory' against immigrants and latinos.

I think it should definitely be done, especially in Escondido where they have some big issues all the way around. I was happy to read the part where they were having the driver's car towed or parked safely rather than let a licensed driver take it. Then I got to this part of the article:

"The lawsuit cites a 2005 ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which found that the Cornelius, Ore., police unreasonably towed a vehicle driven by an unlicensed driver when there was no other violation, the vehicle was parked properly and a licensed driver was available.

Efrén Ruiz, 68, is one of four Escondido plaintiffs in the latest lawsuit."

Of course there will be lawsuits and cries of discrimination because it couldn't possibly have a thing to do with breaking the law. It's too bad that L.A. backed down on doing it just because of this lawsuit. People need to wake up and understand that this IS about safe roads and reducing hit and runs...nothing else.

I think its a great idea and like most of the others I do not see any discrimination, its a check point for heavens sake! If your not breaking the law your fine. If you are breaking the law and driving without a license you shouldn't be on the road in the first place.

As a person who pays not only personal insurance but insurance on our company vehicles, I completely support their efforts. The premiums are ridiculous and we now have to carry extra insurance for those that are under insured or UNinsured.... Impound the car and put the driver in jail for a certain amount of time.

I beleive they should. There are citizens who drive without a license as well so they aren't being discriminated against.

Of course unless you consider what an illegal did here........he had his car impounded for driving drunk without a license, insurance etc. and just decided to get a buddy to rob an ice-cream place a few days later to get the money to get his car out. His reasoning? I needed the car the go to work. Does it ever end?

I think that if a US citizen or legal immigrant get pulled over by any law enforcement officer, and they are not allowed to drive their vehicle away, because they do not have a legal license on them, that vehicle is towed.

I think that illegal aliens are not better than US citizens are, and if they drive a vehicle with no legal license to drive, and are pulled over by law enforcement, that vehicle should be towed JUST LIKE ANYONE ELSES IS.

The LAPD (Los Angeles) has just announced they will not be towing the vehicles of any illegal aliens who are stopped and found to be driving without a license. They will still be towing any vehicles of legal citizens and legal immigrants who are driving with no legal license.

I think this law is illegal discrimination against United States citizens.

I think any US citizen or legal immigrant has his car towed as a result of any law enforcement stop, if he or she is arrested and the sheriff or police has their car towed, the legal citizens and legal immigrants can, and should, file a class action lawsuit against the police, and the city which has a discriminatory policy stating that no illegal alien will have their car towed.
You can sue the police, you can sue the city, you can sue the county, I have done it, and I have won.

The legal drivers on California roadways are required to show proof of registration, a legal drivers license (even if it is a current and valid foreign license) and proof of existing current insurance on the vehicle.
To allow illegal aliens to circumvent the laws of the state of California is a violation of the rights of all citizens and legal residents of this nation who reside in the state of California.

Federal law supercedes state law.
State law supercedes county and city law.

There is no way in hell any city can write a law which negates the laws of the nation of the United States, or the state in which that city exists.

Take it to the state court, the city ordinance or law is invalid.

I have to say honestly, that I don't think law enforcement should confiscate an unlicensed driver's vehicle unless that vehicle has been used recklessly, caused harm to others, was stolen, or the owner has a DUI record. If an illegal alien driver managed to obtain a car in the United States, was caught driving--but not deported---they will be able to get another one, catch a bus, or ride in their friend's car.

Anyway, law enforcement mainly enforces new ways to collect fines, and to shove the same crackheads through the ever revolving overcrowded jailhouse doors. The U.S. legal system is a joke, taking people's cars is not going to stop unlicensed and uninsured driving.

I like the idea. And the way to avoid racial profiling is to nail all of those without drivers licenses, and insurance. Which is exactly what those officers are doing. Nailing everyone. So there is no discrimination going on.

I think the Hispanics, and Latinos who are complaining, should grow a backbone and deal with it. Take their medicine like everyone else has to.

I thought they already did this everywhere, I guess I was wrong. It should be done of course.
In Nevada, you can't register your car without first showing proff of insurance. At first I thought is was a bad law because I still like to believe people will do the right thing and get insurance without being told by the government to do it.Now I realize that many people just will not do the right thing on their own and must be forced to do it.

Impound the car, and put the driver in jail. Why is it when ever law enforcement tries to enforce the law for the good of all, some cry racism because most of those caught, had no business being here because they are illegal. Mr. Ruiz should have lost his car for good, for aiding and abetting a illegal, who he knew he was illegal, but still let her drive his car.

The real reason is that there are not enough impound lots in the county to accommodate all those cars.

I thought they already did this.
Of course they should impound a person's vehicle if they're driving without a license!
