My son turns one on December 20th. I want to make it special, but I don't have any ideas. We live in a small town so there aren't alot of venues we could rent out. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

This is the birthday party that you get to plan for YOU. Your son will never remember any of this, so build the party around you and the people you love. 1 year olds do not socialize much with other babies, so you can invite all adults if you wish. Everybody will be happy that YOUR baby is 1 year old TODAY!!

1. This is during the busy season, so I'd pass out invitations very early, like 4-5 weeks. If people don't respond fairly quickly, you may want to call them so they don't schedule something on top of your party.

2. You've got to plan this around your son's naptime. A tired kid will scream and cry and make everyrone miserable, besides the baby who isn't having any fun at all.

3. Plan the "Kodak moments" while he's in a good mood and rested, not hungry. Serve the cake, watch him open a few presents (he doesn't need to do them all) and blow out the candles (you will need to practice this with him prior to b-day).

4. Babies love balloons.

Congratulations to you and your bouncing boy!!

For my son's first birthday, I had a cowboy theme. I had all my siblings and their kids who were all over 10. But I got a cake with a cowboy and a horse on it. It was a big cake and I let my son have at it. At first he gingerly touched the cake waiting for me to say stop but when he realized it was okay. He really got in to it, digging cake and throwing cake up in the air. I pulled it away for a minute and let people get a slice that wanted it and gave it back. These are some of the best pictures I have. He won't remember it but I will and my family still talks about it. No one could believe I would let him mess up a big store bought cake like that. Some have said I should have bought a real small one for that but I thought nope, your only one once

Well my baby is turning 1 next month but we are not doing anything "big" for him. He's too little and wont remember so I'm not going to break the bank on that party, I think I wait till the 5th birthday, that will be the bank breaking day. But maybe you could just have some family and friends come over to the house, do an indoor thing. Serve an easy dinner and cake and ice cream, then watch your baby go to town on the cake, he will love it.

I know some people say dont do anything big they wont remeber it, but hey they only turn one once. I was one of those poeple who went all out i had the big party with all the fixins. I rented a room in a hotel and they let me use there meeting room and i had the party there then my guest got to swim. it was nice because i live in ohio and in october it can be very cold. my best advice to you is to do what ever makes you happy. If thats a big party then do it. I look at it this way my son probably wont want big parties when he gets older so I am gonna have all the parties i can now. good luck and follow your heart and do what you want dont listen to anyone but yourself.

I think Elmo themes are cute for boys. Or Thomas the train. Cars are usually a hit, too. If there is nowhere to go in our town, your house will still be a good place. I took my son to Chuck E. Cheese and just let him watch the other kids. He was fascinated. Make sure you get lots of balloons. Kids LOVE them, however, don't let your little one have one unsupervised.
BTW, do what make will YOU happy. If you want a big themed party, have it. It is true that he will not remember it, but you can take pics. He will only be one once and if you want something to remember, do it.
Good luck and best wishes.

How about an indoor luau/BBQ?

When my baby turned 1 - she had NO interest in any festivities and totally ignored her piece of cake. The 1st birthday party is usually for the parents - so dont go too crazy. Save your big budget birthday for the 2nd or 3rd.
