Rats are the cleanest, smartest, funnest small animal that you can get. The others just can't compare. They're ALWAYS interested in what you're doing. Like the personality of a cat or a dog, but you don't have the space? Get a rat... they're little walking beanbags that want nothing more than to love on you. My oldest rat follows me around the house!

Once you do settle on an animal, be sure you do plenty of research and ask us lots of questions about how to care for it!

Well, I'm glad you are being sensible and know you don't have much room. You have chosen the right type of pet.

A gerbil you can have 2 or more.
Hamsters best only have 1.
Rats you can have 2 (best 2 girls)
mice, not had them but I think you can have a few of them together.

I'd go with a hamster or 1 rat.
You can get nice small cages but get the biggest you can. Also get a exercise ball its a must have for rodents, they travel for miles in the wild.
When I was a teenager I had a hamster and I used to have him on my bed out of his cage and play with him. Just watch he dont jump off bed they a bit mad like that lol!

Good luck with you new pet. I'd love to have another rat again, but I just don't have the room at my new house. They have some really cool stuff for rats now.

You have a couple of rodent options. A chinchilla is a bad idea because they need alot of room, to live in. A small rabbit would be okay if you got a small cage. A mouse, hamster, gerbil or rat would probably be the best. I have a syrian hamster, and the only two problems is they sleep aalot (but that is ovious) and two-they aren't very social. A dwarf hamster is alot more social but they like being in pairs (because they are so social). They are harder to pick up (especially for a beginer. I have heard rats are VERY smart and social. That is probably the best choice. As for gerbils and mice I don't know alot about them.

I suggest going to wikipedia and tping in mice as pets and gerbils as pets.

Good luck!

P.S: Another suggestion for a pet might be a small repitle or small bird.

Gerbils! I have two! Gerbils are great. They are dinural, so are awake night and day. They get very excited about any new thing you put into the tank for them and will immediately explore it. You can make cardboard buildings/tunnels for them and they will love crawling into, through, over, and on them. Then they will gnaw it all up. You can house two for a $25 10 gallon set up. Gerbils are cheap too, I've never seen a pet gerbil for more than 6 bucks. They are by far the cleanest of all the small pets, so bedding is not a big expense. They live in clans and groom, nest, play together. You can house up to seven boys in one tank (five gallons of space per gerbil). They are easy to breed and both mother and father are great parents. Gerbils come in about 40 colors and varieties. They are not a big commitment as the life span is about 3 1/2 years. Gerbils are really the best rodent to have in my opinion!

Here are some good sites!- http://www.abcgerbils.com/ and http://www.agsgerbils.org/index.php

Good luck on everything, I hope you get to experience the joy of owning a pet gerbil!=)

I would suggest a hamster of some sort. Possible a Syrian, they're quite big and easy to handle. My gf has one and he's so friendly, unlike most other hamsters that are hard to catch and then bite you once you get hold of them, which most Russians are like. A hamster can take care of it's own exercise in an wheel in it's cage, but bare in mind, the noise can be annoying. They like to chew things too so that could be annoying to listen to at night (when they're mostly active)

Either that or gerbils or an indoor guinea-pig, though, you said your room isn't that big so possibly not a guinea-pig. They'd need room to run around in and a nice big indoor cage.

So, hamsters and gerbils would be your best bet.

Well, if you live somewhere you can get a hamster, they're good, because they sleep all day, and they are better off living alone.

BUT, I would reccomend getting two rats. They are by and far the most intelligent and affectionate of all the rodents. They actually thrive on human affection. They don;t just appreciate you, or tolerate you like some rodents, they actaullly LOVE you and show it to you, just like a dog would.

They can be trained, they will learn their own names, they are cleaner than cats (bonus!).

Well, rats are just the be all and end all for me when it comes to rodents. Rats forever!

*I don't own rats, they own me*

well the best you can get is a rat. mosts rats are very friend if you treat them right. but rats do need a big cage. so if your looking for something small then get a hampster. they are not as friendly as rat but some hampsters can be really nice, you just have to treat them right. but they don't take up also of room.

You could have a hamster.

They can run around exercise balls and play in the bathtub. If you want 2 hamsters, get a pair of female Dwarf Hamsters (Females tend to fight less) but if you only want one, get a Syrian Hamster (Teddy Bears, Black Bears, Golden Hamster, all those nick names are Syrian Hamsters).

I hoped I helped you.

Also, there is a very good cage for hamsters and it is escape proof unless your hamster likes to chew at the bottom corners: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.geocities.com/calhamassoc/Bin1a.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.geocities.com/calhamassoc/FeatureBin.html&h=244&w=367&sz=40&hl=en&start=3&um=1&tbnid=_XtHcaBjChETeM:&tbnh=81&tbnw=122&prev=/images%3Fq%3DHamster%2Bbin%2Bcage%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN
