That depends on many factors the length of barrel, the choke used, the size of shot or projectile used and the style of shell as in light field load all the way to the magnum loads.
Al of these factors determine the range of the shot gun.

A slug is accurate to about 100-120 yards. Shot is accurate at all differnt ranges since the pellet number differs and choke sizes differ, but some shoot 30 yards, some shoot 75 yards.

Strictly for comparison purposes you might want to compare the 20 gauge to the 12 gauge as far as effective distance. They are close, yet have pretty large difference in the number of lead pellets in each shell. Another factor to add to the equation of differences would be if 3" magnum shells were used. Magnum shells would add additional range over a 2 3/4" field loaded shell.

What we teach in Hunter Safety in Colorado is 500 yards. That is assuming that you are shooting at a flying bird and your shotgun is aimed at approx. 45 deg. in the air. And that also would be heavy shot.

The ideal effective range for shooting BB shot is approximately 40 to 50 yards. When shooting rifled slugs anywhere from 50 yards to 150 yards.*

A leather jacket will stop birdshot at about 15 feet. IT goes up from there until you reach slugs which will make it a few hundred yards. Shotguns are for close range, they are not sniper rifles.

With slugs, about 3/4 of a mile. With shot probably only 100-200 yards max.
