Playa del Carmen has long been a heavily visited city on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. It is about 30-40 mi south of Cancun and a short sail from Cozumel. Playa del Carmen is one of the cities in Mexico most visited by European tourist. A great excursion in this area is Xcaret an Eco-theme park, with cave snorkeling, dolphin encounters, several other animals, Mayan ruins and Mayan native cultural exhibitions. Their evening show is wonderful. Playa del Carmen itself has a lot of shopping and depending on the length of the stay is not too far from Chichen Itza the largest Mayan excavation in the America's
This was probably added as the usual RCCL port of call Costa Maya was heavily hit by Hurricane Dean.

I have been to Playa del Carmen twice and it is really nice. The water was very pretty. Now this was before the hurricane a couple of years ago. There is shopping and the beach and it is a lot of fun there.

Aren't all the Mexican ports about the same. Tour some ruins or shop for silver.
