PLEASE-No bashing, as potty training is unique and individual to every child and every parenting situation. I admit I do bribe my son every now and then when I just KNOW he has to go potty, but refuses. My bribe ranges from a food item, to a sticker or a token toy. I know that food should never be used for bribes to get a child to do something, but quite frankly it IS the easiest. Anyone else do the same? BTW, I do NOT bribe my son all the time-no way! Only when he is being extremely stubborn.

Oh let me clarify: I NEVER punish for not making it to the potty- trust me we have had our share of yucky accidents in big boy underpants! In the home, we do a combo of being naked, Pull-ups, & underpants. Ultimately, out in public it's a diaper.

EVERY PARENT WILL BRIBE THEIR CHILD AT SOME POINT AND IT WILL ALWAYS INCLUDE FOOD, STICKERS, TOYS, OR IF ITS GOOD ENOUGH GOING SOMEWHERE...ex park

I prefer the reward chart.

Set a kitchen timer to go off every hour. For each hour the child has not had an accident he or she gets a sticker on the chart. When a whole ROW is filled with stickers, the child gets a special treat like a sticker or stamps, etc.

I would not make each individual bathroom trip an experience worthy of a reward other then general praise. They need to be aware that this is a long term issue.

I'm potty training my 3rd child now.

My oldest boy was extreamly difficult. We had a balloon chart on the bathroom door, every time he used the potty he got to color in a balloon, and every few balloons there was one with a smilely face, when he got to that one it meant he got a sucker.

My daughter just decided one day that she wanted to wear big kid underwear like her older brother. and BAM! instant potty trained, wish I knew how to make that happen again.

Now with my youngest son, he'll be 2 in december, he is showing all the signs of being ready and is just tickled pink when we all clap for him if he used the potty. haven't had to start a reward system yet.

As for bribes, I would suggest you not to bribe him at all to go to the bathroom but instead set up a reward system for when he does. Good luck to you two.

Yes I did use that method to get my kids using it....at the beginning anything that helps is a plus. And don't call it bribery call it "rewarding" the good behavior...your only trying to do what is best so don't feel bad. There are times when nothing else will work and you need to resort to certain items to get younger kids to snap out of their stubbornness and pay attention. Also using food is not all bad, depending on what is being offered, and how often.

I won't lie, of course I brided my children with potty training. It worked the best for us. Each my girls when they went they got 5 m&ms. And then finally when they were fully potty trained during the day I took them to the store to pick out a new toy!

i am a daycare teacher and i take care of 2 year old and we potty train the children by having the parents take the kid to the store and let them pick out there favorite big boy/girl underwear and then we tell them that when they go on the potty for a week you will get to wear your big girl/boy underwear and after the week you let them wear it and tell them that if they go in there underwear they have to back into there pull-ups/diapers whatever you decide

Never did,,raised three...didn't punish if they didn't make it to the "potty" either,

Daughter was so much easier than the boys...and so much sooner
She was trained ( not me ) by the time she was 15 months...I thought the boys would wear diapers to first grade..such a difference..

there's not a thing wrong with rewarding a kid with a little something for an achievment as big as using the potty. My MO has always been M&Ms and it has always worked. I've been raising mine and everyone else's kids for 36 years!

We actually dropped a "Cheerio" cereal piece or two into the bowl when we started to potty train our son.
This way he had somewhere to aim.....
