From a non-christian point of view, the return of the christ will be when those that profess to follow him start walking his words.

AT the first place, early christians won't have the idea about the 2nd coming of christ if Jesus didn't tell them so. now, the idea has been passed down to generations to generations until this very time. Christians now awaits for the 2nd coming of Christ.
As a christian, my belief in the 2nd coming of Christ is that, Jesus has an unfinished business and that is the establishment of the promised Kingdom of Heaven on Earth as well as in the Spirit World.
This was Jesus original purpose and mission.
On His return, He will definitely establish this promised Kingdom, which is after all, mankinds hope as well.

This is a very controversial area for we Christians.
Some say that He'll come back secretly and believers will magically float into the air; then all sheol breaks loose on earth and we get to watch, like at a baseball game.
Some say that mid way between horrible things happening on the earth, Jesus will return, we'll float into the air and get to watch; like at a bloody gladiator 'game'. Gad, why don't they tear down that building (coliseum) where so much evil occurred?
Some say that horrible things will happen on the earth: Air pollution, no Water, Nuclear war(s), plagues, dogs who owners could not feed running in packs and killing people, great famine in the world, oh and some dude (with a big army) named the beast is going to exterminate as many Christians as he can. Then, before everything dies, because of the heat, no food, no water, wars and no fish - Jesus will return.
Some say : He already returned and His spirit is the reason that we have 'good will toward man' HA! How absurd !!
Some say: He isn't coming back, the test of Time says so. What they fail to recognize is, the test of time is NOT a test, it is merely that time passes and the Lord tarries. For each day that He doesn't return, we are one day closer to when He does.

Good luck on getting consistent answers.
There are no consistent beliefs about the "second coming". Some believe that there will be a "rapture" where their god beams up all the "good Christians" and lets everyone left behind suffer the wrath of their god. Others believe that everyone gets to suffer while the world is ravaged in the wosrt imaginable ways by their imaginary sky tyrant.
Still others rgard the story of Revelation as purely metaphorical, or part of a cycle of transformation. The variety of opinions about the subject fills libraries.

There are as many variations of such beliefs as there are Protestant denominations. However, the beliefs of the original Christian Church, which have been held for 2,000 years, and which are bound in heaven according to biblical truth, are ...
Christ will come a manner that is visible to every person on earth. Those in a position to saved will be saved. All others will be condemned. The earth and the physical universe will cease to exist. After that all there will be is eternity.

Jesus will come; we don't know when or the time. He will take only the faithful ones who are saved, cleaned and has Jesus in there hearts; above the clouds into heaven to be with him forever and ever. Every eye; the wicked ones and unwicked ones will see Jesus Christ's second coming. My suggestion is to read the chapter of Revelation to get the full description.

Most believe that it will actually happen in physical reality - Jesus will appear as a spiritual leader of some sort. It is all misunderstanding the meaning of "second coming/resurrection of/rebirth of", etc. of the authentic, original Self.
It is potentially true for each individual and references a psychological transcending of the little learned identity and remembering of the essential nature and purpose.

The Second Coming of Jesus Christ is the hope of believers that God is in control of all things, and is faithful to the promises and prophecies in His Word. In His first coming, Jesus Christ came to earth as a baby in a manager in Bethlehem, just as prophesied. Jesus fulfilled many of the prophecies of the Messiah during His birth, life, ministry, death, and resurrection. However, there are some prophecies regarding the Messiah that Jesus has not, as of yet, fulfilled. The Second Coming of Christ will be the return of Christ to fulfill these remaining prophecies. In His first coming, Jesus was the suffering servant. In His Second Coming, Jesus will be the conquering King. In His first coming, Jesus arrived in the most humble of circumstances. In His Second Coming, Jesus will arrive with the armies of Heaven at His side.
The Old Testament Prophets did not make this distinction between the two comings. This can be seen in Scriptures such as Isaiah 7:14; 9:6-7; and Zechariah 14:4. As a result of the prophecies seeming to speak of two individuals, many Jewish scholars believed there would be both a suffering Messiah and a conquering Messiah. What they failed to understand is that the same Messiah would fulfill both roles. Jesus fulfilled the role of the suffering servant (Isaiah chapter 53) in His first coming. Jesus will fulfill the role of Israel’s deliverer and King in His Second Coming. Zechariah 12:10 and Revelation 1:7, describing the Second Coming, look back to Jesus being pierced. Israel, and the whole world, will mourn for not having accepted the Messiah the first time He came.
After Jesus ascended into Heaven, the angels declared to the apostles, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11). Zechariah 14:4 identifies the location of the Second Coming as the Mount of Olives. Matthew 24:30 declares, “At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory.” Titus 2:13 describes the Second Coming as a “glorious appearing.”
The Second Coming is spoken of in greatest detail in Revelation 19:11-16, "And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself. He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."
