BTW Can you use downy every now and then to soften your hair or will it damage hair?

I've never heard of the Downy trick, so I wouldn't want to risk it. I think the best trick is to use egg white instead of conditioner, but you really have to make sure that you rinse it out well, otherwise it smells. I've also tried using olive oil, which softens your hair and adds shine, but you have to shampoo about 5 times afterwards to stop it from getting greasy. I do prefer olive oil to mayonaisse, though, because mayo provides the same result but is much smellier.

If you are looking for a conditioning treatment for dry hair, mayonnaise is the best, but it can be smelly...make sure you wash your hair well and that you haven't rubbed the mayo into your scalp. Olive oil is great too, but it works better as an end treatment. Olive oil is very difficult to remove from the top of your head. You can put olive oil (or mayo, but it's stinkier) onto hair and cover your head with a shower cap; the extra heat will help your hair absorb it, making it softer.

If you want shine, use an egg.

If you want body, use beer.

Don't use Downy to soften your hair. You can run a dryer-sheet over your hair to reduce static, but downy really isn't made for hair and you'd only be harming your hair due to the chemicals, and in the long run, it will strip your scalp of natural oil, which protects your hair. Hair is nothing like clothing. So, unless you eventually want to be bald, stick to conditioner.
