Let your father know that you promise to clean the litter box DAILY and mean it. If not, your dad will not see you being responsible....and thats never a good thing. Tell him you are willing to take part of your allowance money and purchase the kitty litter and box and show him that you can do this all by yourself. Your kitty will be happier being an indoor kitty and will be flea free/ant free and much, much healthier.
Good luck. Patti

A maintained litter box won't smell. Get one for indoors, keep it clean (every time he uses it you scoop the stuff, stick it in a bag and when the bag is full enough you take that outside to dispose of it.)

He's probably thinking of the smell, but if you scoop as the cat uses it, there isn't a smell. We have one box and five cats, I do two major scoops a day (morning and at 5pm) and check it with a quickglance when I walk by during the evening, so all in all I don't think it takes me more than 2 1/2 minutes a day to keep up with the five of these guys. It's a non-issue.

I also live in a rural area and fully believe that at a minimum cats should be in an enclosed building at night - too many predators that can kill them, especially coyotes at night where we live. My cat is indoor/outdoor and because he hates sleeping in the house at night with the dogs (but will begrudgingly choose to if it it is really hot or cold), he chooses to sleep in the garage rather than the house. He has a litterbox out there. Your dad may find that solution acceptable. I am not a fan of litterboxes in the house either, so this works for all of us (cat, dogs, and people). Fleas can be managed with a monthly dose of Advantage.

You are right. Cats can get terrible diseases and more from being outside. You can convince him by buying an air freashener, to keep it smelling nice, and find and area where it will not be in the way.
