I have benefited from believing in a generic "higher power" even while at church. It makes my life better & easier.I seem to ignore the specifics of religion but I still feel a spiritual life is a benefit.

Those religions and denominations exist. They just fly under the radar. It's not their intention to spread the word and evangelize and create a massive following. They want people to find their own way.

Example: Unitarian Universalist

I believe that the strongest driver remains survival of species, selfish genes and indirectly sexual attraction. I've always held that had it not been for women, we'd not have invented the wheel. Your question jumps a whole lot of intermediate steps. Apes did not stand on their hind legs and called for parliament in the same way that those Wright brothers didn't look at the sky and decided to fly. It was decades of incremental steps taken one generation at a time that resulted in this complex world. I think that above religion as a core driver of modern societies stands the human need to progress. It's hard wired. We want to belong, we want to be loved, we want to progress. It's how we are. Combined with the fact that we have the written word - that we can record knowledge and not be forced to reinvent the wheel - makes the sort of progress you mention almost an inevitable consequence of a densely populated world. Human beings are social. Mirror neuron theories proves that we were made to be around other humans. A absolutely lonely human will die very quickly. Our societies are not only religious and philosophical entities, they are also economic entities which on many levels grant us safety in numbers. The economic principle of comparative advantage shows just how useful it is to work and live together. The fact that philosophy and religion played a part in what societies look like is undeniable. I do however doubt whether societies exist to serve a religious or philosophical principle. It's almost like saying they invented a car to so as they have something to which to apply theories of aerodynamics. The reality is that they invented a car and then applied aerodynamic principles to improve its efficiency.

How many religion do you need. I hope not every society need religion. If that happens, the next hundred years, hundred religions are form. Then the questions arise. Who is the God for each of the religion.

Yeah I think so. Once a current religion becomes unrealistic because of scientific advances, why not just make a new one that is more believable. And 150 years down the road when that one becomes out of date, make up a new one. How convinient

Yeah, I have a proposal for a new religion. It's really simple...you go to the place of worship as often as you like, where somebody wearing soft clothing will hug you and say "don't worry, everything's going to be alright". Isn't that what all religion is basically saying, anyway?

To invent your own religion is to invent your own god, which we call "idolotry". Why bother? You just don't want to make the tough changes in your life that God requires: You want to live according to your own rules and not God's. So then, just live the way you want to, and don't bother with the farce of creating a religion to suit you

We already have a reasonable "religion":

God = the Universe, and we are all part of this.

Scientific Pantheism.
