Loaned my Toshiba camera out and it came back with the typical "been dropped" lens problem. When you turn it on it growls and groans as the lens attempts to come out. It will only focus at one location and the view finder no longer tracks with the lens zoom. Then it really grinds when turned off and the lens jumps gears going back in. Sound familiar?
Being a well experienced service tech, I proceeded to "fix it". Having tore it down to the point that I surmised no human had been there before and I was not the automated robot that assembled the thing, I went out and bought a Pentax SLR.
Short version of the story: You owe someone a new camera - sorry.

OOOO. You
are in trouble
get second job now
think of good apology
dont cry - think of a plan
nothing I can do to HEEEEELP!

no seriously. I think you should just think of a nice way to apologize and maybe some sort of payment plan. Don't try to be deceptive about the fact that you broke the camera. You'll probably only make the relationship between you and the victim worse. Good luck.

Take it to the repair shop. Repair will probably cost more than a new camera so you may as well face the music and tell the camera's owner and plan on buying them a new camera.
