You could say that a plant uses water, co2 and light as foods as well. Plant food is just the equivalent of vitamins and minerals.

Since you've put this in the science section, I'll assume we're using science terminology.

Strictly speaking, fertiliser isn't food at all.

Plants make their own food; it's those of us who don't photosynthesize our food that need to get food from elsewhere.

It's not what they need - it's what they DON'T need...

Chemical fertilizers DO have everything the plant needs - but it is mixed in there with hundreds (maybe even thousands) of other things that are NOT useful. Things like binding agents (to keep the chemicals together) and preservatives (to give longer shelf life) can actually cause HARM to the very plants that they are supposed to be helping ;););)

If you're talking about synthetic fertilizers like miracle-gro then it is not all that they need.. Plants need the real thing, not synthetic garbage
