yes they are. Not only can they cause skin cancer but they age the skin prematurely. I used to use them, i had to have 3 moles cut out and the skin on my chest looks more like that of a 55 year old and not a 35 year old. Don't use them, you will regret it later in life.
Edit - ash#0 above me has another very good reason!!

I think done in moderation say to prep your skin for a holiday is fine so long as you use plenty of sunbed creme before you go on.I do 6 mins once a week. Before my hols I went on sunbed which was great becuase it stopped me from burning on holiday and I did'nt peel.I do agree that excessive use is'nt good ,but now and again just to top up your holiday tan is ok.

sun beds are one of the most worse things you could do to your body. now we all know sitting out in the sun for a long time is bad , but imagin sitting on the sun, wouldnt be good for u now would it be? well sitting in a sunbed is doing nothing but shotting uv rays directly into your skin witch triggers skin cancer, also that tan color...that just ur skin gettin fryed

Skin cancer is caused by the UV radiation in sunlight.
Sunbeds use UV radiation to tan your skin, so you're exposing yourself to the same damaging UV radiation that causes skin cancer.
The more UV you're exposed to at a young age, the higher your chances of getting skin cancer.

You won't suddenly die under one! However they do increase your statistical risk of skin cancers. like all radiation there is no absolute safe level for UV.
