I would add a little heavy cream or corn starch and refrigerate the icing for a couple hours to thicken it up.

It depends on how runny your icing is. In general, Yes, you can use cornstarch (not corn flour) to thicken the icing. You can also use tapioca starch (not the pearls) and arrowroot starch. As at least one other answerer mentioned, you can also use softened cream cheese. Using starch or cream cheese will "dilute" the sweetness of the icing, so you won't want to add a lot, unless the taste change is acceptable. If your icing is simply too warm it will get runny, so refrigeration will help.
One answerer mentioned that powdered sugar has cornstarch added and received a "thumb down" vote. That answerer is correct. A small amount of cornstarch IS added to powdered sugar. But only just enough to prevent caking of the sugar.
