Shellfish allergy?

Question

Whenever I eat shrimp, I start wheezing and I get rashy and red. Does this mean I have a food allergy to shellfish, or is it a food intolerance? Can I cure this?

Shellfish allergy is pretty common. Depending on your age you may outgrow it. Otherwise it's probably a good idea to stay away from it, especially if it affects your breathing.

As far as other shellfish, you can try it in moderation. If you tolerate it great...if you can't (which will more than likely be the case) then stick with fin-type seafood. Also, while the little fake crab legs don't taste exactly like crab, they are made from fin-fish and shouldn't cause a problem. Allergy is an immune system disorder. It is chronic (which means it can't be "cured") but it can be controlled to to extent that it doesn't cause you problems. The wheezing reaction is cause for concern as this sound like a mild asthma attack. So no matter what you do, leave those coconut fried shrimp for other people to eat!
