Eating a large meal such as a holiday dinner tends to produce a substance called L-Tryptophan, which tends to cause drowsiness. I get the same way after a huge Thanksgiving or Christmas feast.

It is because blood is diverted to the digestive process and so the brain gets less oxygen for a while and you feel tired.
You can invigorate the supply by going for a walk after eating.

Hi Becky boo,
Our genes dictate that we search for food because our survival depends on it. It is also "hard coded" in our genes to conserve this stored energy in case we don't find more immediately.
It now becomes logical to be active when hungry so we can find food. When we get to consume that food, then slow down to prolong the energy that we have gathered.

blood rushes to your gut after a meal and there is a natural response not to do active work as that would mean blood rushing to your limbs and away from the gut

lots of reason but majorly your parasympathetic system kicks in (responsible for "resting and digesting") so signals to your brain to feel more relaxed. to a degree, blood is going to your stomach cos it's time for it to start working so you get less oxygen delivery to your brain and also makes you feel sleepy

Because your blood rushes from you head to your stomach to aid your digestion system, leaving you feeling tired.
